Une cartographie mondiale inédite révèle l’ampleur de la pollution plastique
Des chercheurs internationaux, dont une équipe de la Florida Atlantic University, ont cartographié pour la première fois la distribution des microplastiques depuis la surface jusqu’aux grandes profondeurs océaniques. En analysant des données issues de 1 885 stations océanographiques collectées entre 2014 et 2024, l’étude révèle que ces particules sont omniprésentes dans la colonne d’eau et qu’elles s’intègrent désormais aux grands cycles biogéochimiques, représentant jusqu’à 5 % des particules de carbone à 2 000 mètres de profondeur. Cette infiltration massive dans les systèmes océaniques critiques pourrait perturber la régulation du climat et les réseaux trophiques marins, soulignant l’urgence d’une meilleure surveillance et de technologies de mesure plus cohérentes à l’échelle mondiale.
Les microplastiques à base d’amidon pourraient présenter un risque pour la santé
Une étude menée sur des souris suggère que les microplastiques dérivés de polymères à base d’amidon, couramment utilisés comme alternative écologique aux plastiques conventionnels, pourraient causer divers dommages physiologiques à long terme. Après une exposition prolongée à ces microparticules, les chercheurs ont observé chez les animaux une inflammation du foie, une perturbation de la fonction du côlon, ainsi que des niveaux élevés de glucose sanguin, évoquant un risque accru de diabète. Bien que ces résultats soulèvent des inquiétudes importantes, des recherches complémentaires, notamment chez l’humain, restent nécessaires pour confirmer clairement ces effets sur la santé.

L’UE adopte des règles pour stopper la pollution par les granulés plastiques
Le Conseil européen et le Parlement européen se sont provisoirement mis d’accord sur un nouveau règlement visant à empêcher la perte de granulés plastiques dans l’environnement. Ce texte impose aux entreprises des mesures concrètes de prévention, de gestion des risques et de nettoyage en cas d’accident. Il prévoit également une certification obligatoire pour les entreprises traitant plus de 1 500 tonnes par an. Le transport maritime des granulés devra suivre des règles strictes, conformes aux directives internationales.
Recycler les polyesters grâce aux déchets soufrés du pétrole
Des chercheurs de l’Université de Bayreuth ont mis au point une méthode innovante pour améliorer la durabilité des polyesters, en incorporant des déchets soufrés issus du raffinage pétrolier. Grâce à l’intégration de liaisons chimiques dynamiques issues du soufre, ces plastiques deviennent facilement réparables, remodelables et recyclables à répétition sans perte notable de qualité. Cette approche simple et écoénergétique, utilisant un catalyseur accessible (alcoxyde de lithium), ouvre la voie à des matériaux plastiques plus circulaires et durables.
Comment fonctionnent les poêles antiadhésives, et faut-il passer aux revêtements « verts » ?
Les poêles antiadhésives classiques utilisent des revêtements à base de polytétrafluoroéthylène (PTFE), un polymère fluoré très performant mais issu des substances perfluoroalkylées (PFAS), surnommées « produits chimiques éternels » en raison de leur persistance dans l’environnement. Face aux inquiétudes sanitaires et environnementales croissantes, de nouvelles lois bannissent ces revêtements dans plusieurs pays. Les alternatives actuelles, notamment les revêtements « céramiques » sans fluor, gagnent en popularité, mais leur durabilité et efficacité antiadhésive restent légèrement inférieures à celles du PTFE. Si ces solutions « vertes » sont prometteuses, leur performance à long terme nécessite encore des améliorations pour égaler pleinement les polymères fluorés.
Des microgels injectables pour une libération contrôlée simplifiée des médicaments
Des chercheurs de l’Université du Michigan ont développé une méthode simple et accessible pour fabriquer des microgels injectables capables de libérer précisément des médicaments à des moments programmés. Cette nouvelle technique, basée sur l’utilisation de liaisons ioniques plutôt que covalentes, nécessite uniquement un tube de centrifugation, une aiguille et différents bains ioniques, permettant ainsi de contrôler finement les propriétés du gel et le rythme de libération du médicament encapsulé. Applicable sans matériel complexe, cette approche démocratise les traitements médicaux avancés, notamment en oncologie.
