Recyclage durable des GFRP par plasma thermique
Le Leibniz Institute for Plasma Science and Technology (INP) développe un nouveau procédé pour recycler les plastiques renforcés de fibres de verre (GRP) de manière durable. Ce projet, baptisé PLAS4PLAS et financé par la fondation Volkswagen, repose sur une gazéification allothermique utilisant du plasma thermique. Le gaz de synthèse obtenu pourra servir de matière première pour produire de nouveaux plastiques, tandis que les fibres de verre restantes seront étudiées pour d’autres applications. Contrairement à l’incinération classique, ce processus limite les émissions de CO₂ et valorise entièrement les déchets. L’objectif est de développer un réacteur de gazéification à grande échelle et d’évaluer l’impact écologique, économique et sociétal de cette technologie plasma prometteuse pour instaurer une véritable économie circulaire dans le secteur des composites.
Un nouveau revêtement antimicrobien transforme la lutte contre les super-bactéries
Des chercheurs de l’Université de Nottingham ont mis au point un revêtement à base de chlorhexidine incorporé dans une résine pouvant être appliquée sous forme de peinture sur diverses surfaces plastiques et dures pour éliminer efficacement les bactéries et virus, y compris des agents pathogènes résistants comme le MRSA, la grippe ou le COVID-19. Une fois sèche, cette peinture antimicrobienne s’active sans libérer de substances dans l’environnement ni perdre en efficacité au toucher. Testée en partenariat avec Indestructible Paint, ce revêtement a démontré sa capacité à empêcher durablement la prolifération microbienne sur des surfaces fréquemment touchées dans les hôpitaux ou les transports. Cette innovation ouvre de nouvelles perspectives pour limiter les infections nosocomiales et répondre à l’urgence sanitaire posée par la résistance antimicrobienne, tout en offrant une solution simple, durable et adaptée aux exigences industrielles.

La lignine : une alternative végétale pour des plastiques sans BPA
Des chercheurs de l’Arizona State University développent des plastiques à base de lignine pour remplacer ceux dérivés du BPA, réduisant les risques sanitaires et environnementaux. La lignine, sous-produit abondant de l’industrie papetière, est transformée en blocs de construction polymères capables de rivaliser avec la résistance et la tenue thermique des plastiques traditionnels. Grâce à la présence de groupes méthoxy, ces matériaux permettent d’ajuster leur affinité avec l’eau, un avantage majeur pour des applications comme la filtration de l’eau ou la capture du CO₂. Testés sans effet perturbateur endocrinien, ces polymères offrent aussi des perspectives intéressantes de recyclabilité, participant à l’émergence de matériaux polymères à cycle de vie circulaire, inspirés des processus naturels.
Certaines résines accélèrent la corrosion des artefacts métalliques
Des chercheurs ont révélé que certaines résines utilisées pour protéger des objets métalliques archéologiques peuvent, au contraire, accélérer leur corrosion. Publiée dans ACS Central Science, l’étude montre que des résines acryliques appliquées sur des métaux contenant du fer, comme l’acier ou la fonte, réagissent en vieillissant sous l’effet de la chaleur et des UV, favorisant la formation de groupes carboxyles corrosifs. Pour détecter précocement ces réactions néfastes sans endommager les artefacts, une nouvelle stratégie d’imagerie en fluorescence 3D a été développée. Testée sur des pièces modernes et sur une pièce de fer de la dynastie Song, cette approche a mis en évidence l’aggravation de la rouille après vieillissement accéléré de la résine. Ces résultats soulignent la nécessité de développer des polymères plus stables intégrant des additifs anti-âge pour mieux préserver le patrimoine métallique archéologique.

Matériaux biosourcés pour l’intérieur du concept-car électrique EV2 de Kia
Kia innove avec son Concept EV2 en intégrant des matériaux biosourcés dans l’aménagement intérieur de son SUV électrique. Le tableau de bord et les panneaux de porte utilisent le Fybron de Simplifyber, un composite moulable à base de cellulose issu de ressources renouvelables comme le bois, le papier et des textiles recyclés. Ce matériau réduit l’empreinte environnementale tout en offrant une texture douce et résistante. L’habitacle incorpore également des éléments en mycélium, issus des racines de champignons cultivés par Biomyc, utilisés sous forme de composites avec du polyuréthane ou de volumes solides mêlés à des déchets agricoles. Ces matériaux biodégradables apportent à l’intérieur une esthétique naturelle et des propriétés thermiques intéressantes. Enfin, Kia intègre le composite ampliTex de Bcomp, à base de fibres de lin, dans la structure des sièges, permettant un allègement du véhicule sans compromis sur la robustesse. En associant innovation et respect de l’environnement, le Concept EV2 préfigure la volonté de Kia de démocratiser l’usage de polymères naturels et recyclables dans ses futurs modèles.

Production de poly(ester amide)s par ingénierie microbienne
Des chercheurs du KAIST ont développé de nouveaux polymères de type poly(ester amide) grâce à l’ingénierie métabolique de souches microbiennes. Ces matériaux, combinant les avantages du PET et du nylon tout en évitant l’usage de ressources fossiles, présentent des propriétés proches du polyéthylène haute densité. Le processus utilise du glucose issu de biomasse abondante, comme les résiduels agricoles, pour produire neuf types de poly(ester amide)s à haute efficacité de fermentation (54,57 g/L). En collaboration avec le KRICT, les propriétés mécaniques des nouveaux matériaux ont été validées pour remplacer les plastiques conventionnels. Cette approche offre une véritable alternative durable pour la chimie des polymères, en prévoyant également une facilité de recyclage grâce aux fonctionnalités spécifiques apportées par la lignine. Publié dans Nature Chemical Biology, ce travail ouvre de nouvelles perspectives pour une économie circulaire des plastiques.
