MacroCycle révolutionne le recyclage des plastiques par une approche à faible consommation énergétique
MacroCycle présente une technologie innovante permettant de recycler les plastiques, notamment le PET, en consommant jusqu’à 80 % moins d’énergie que les méthodes traditionnelles. Basée sur une chimie brevetée, cette solution unique transforme les déchets en « macrocycles » — un intermédiaire qui, une fois reconverti, reconstitue des polymères d’une qualité équivalente à celle des matériaux vierges, tout en évitant les étapes énergivores de décomposition. Ce procédé, qui réduit également les coûts de production de 50 à 75 %, offre une réponse efficace aux défis liés à la contamination des flux de déchets et à l’intensité énergétique des recyclages mécaniques et chimiques actuels. La technologie de MacroCycle, fondée sur des travaux académiques menés par le Dr Jan-Georg Rosenboom et ses collaborateurs, cible en priorité la valorisation des bouteilles en PET et des textiles en polyester issus de divers secteurs industriels, allant des cosmétiques à l’alimentation, en passant par la mode. Soutenue par un financement de 6,5 millions de dollars obtenu auprès de Clean Energy Ventures et de Volta Circle, l’entreprise ambitionne de créer une chaîne d’approvisionnement circulaire efficace, capable de transformer le marché linéaire des plastiques en une filière à haute valeur ajoutée, tout en contribuant à la réduction de l’empreinte carbone globale du secteur.

Nouvelle technique d’impression 3D reproduit avec précision les fibres délicates de la nature
Des chercheurs de l’Université de l’Illinois Grainger College of Engineering ont mis au point une méthode d’impression 3D embarquée innovante qui permet de reproduire des fibres ultra-fines, imitant ainsi les structures naturelles telles que la soie d’araignée ou les filaments du hagfish. Contrairement aux techniques traditionnelles en air, cette approche dépose le matériau dans un gel support modifié, éliminant le besoin de structures de soutien et évitant ainsi les problèmes de rupture des filaments sous l’effet de la tension de surface. Grâce à un procédé d’échange de solvant qui induit une solidification quasi immédiate du matériau dès son dépôt, l’équipe a réussi à atteindre une résolution impressionnante de 1,5 micron, ouvrant la voie à la production de structures complexes et délicates. L’utilisation de buses multiples permet également d’accélérer la fabrication, tandis que le design du gel non-newtonien assure la stabilité des filaments pendant et après le processus de cure. Cette avancée, publiée dans Nature Communications, pose les bases d’une nouvelle génération de matériaux bio-inspirés et ultra-précis, avec des applications potentielles allant de la biomimétique à la microélectronique.

Des champignons marins surdoués pour dégrader le plastique
Des chercheurs de l’Université d’Hawaï à Mānoa, dirigés par Ronja Steinbach, ont découvert que plus de 60 % des espèces fongiques isolées dans l’environnement côtier d’Hawaï possèdent la capacité de dégrader des plastiques tels que le polyuréthane. En exposant ces champignons à des échantillons de polyuréthane dans des conditions contrôlées, l’équipe a démontré qu’ils transforment le plastique en biomasse. Mieux encore, grâce à une expérimentation d’évolution en laboratoire sur une période de trois mois, certains champignons ont pu augmenter leur taux de consommation du plastique jusqu’à 15 %, démontrant ainsi une aptitude remarquable à s’adapter pour accélérer la dégradation. Cette recherche, publiée dans Mycologia (DOI : 10.1080/00275514.2024.2422598), met en lumière le potentiel de ces organismes marins peu étudiés – moins de 1 % des champignons marins étant actuellement décrits – pour contribuer à la lutte contre la pollution plastique dans les océans, notamment face à l’afflux massif de déchets plastique provenant du courant de la Grande Plaque de Déchets du Pacifique. Les chercheurs envisagent désormais d’étendre leurs travaux à d’autres types de plastique, comme le polyéthylène et le PET, et espèrent collaborer avec ingénieurs, chimistes et océanographes pour traduire ces découvertes en solutions concrètes de dépollution.
Hommage Frédéric Leising
Nous apprenons avec tristesse le décès de Frédéric Leising, lauréat du Prix d’Honneur du GFP 2018, survenu le 28 janvier dernier.
Après ses études d’ingénieur à l’Ecole des Hauts Polymères de Strasbourg et une thèse en chimie, il avait rejoint Rhône-Poulenc et son Centre de Recherches d’Aubervilliers en 1978 au Service de Synthèse des Polymères. Il y travailla en particulier sur la polymérisation en émulsion. Son parcours le conduisit en 1987, toujours chez Rhône-Poulenc, au Centre de Recherches des Carrières à Saint-Fons, où il prit en charge le service Recherches de synthèse sur les silicones. L’étape suivante de son parcours professionnel le ramena en 1993 à Aubervilliers pour devenir Directeur de Département puis Animateur Scientifique et Technique du centre. Ce poste de direction scientifique lui permit de lancer de nombreuses collaborations avec des laboratoires universitaires français et étrangers, actifs en particulier dans les domaines de la chimie et de la physicochimie des polymères. Il quitta Rhône-Poulenc, devenu Rhodia, en 2005. Il entama alors une carrière de consultant et ses très larges compétences dans le domaine des polymères firent qu’il fut sollicité par des industries de secteurs très variés allant de l’aéronautique à la cosmétique. Il rejoint ensuite Chryso, société du secteur de la chimie de la construction, en tant que Conseiller scientifique.
Acteur impliqué de la collaboration entre l’industrie et le monde académique, il siégea à la section 15 du Comité national de la recherche scientifique. Ayant aussi à cœur de partager sa passion de la chimie, et des polymères en particulier, il enseigna durant de nombreuses années, notamment à l’ESCOM, mais aussi en formation continue à CPE Lyon. Ses anciens collègues se souviennent de l’enthousiasme de Frédéric lorsqu’une séance de « remue-méninges » se présentait, et sa créativité et son savoir, entretenus par la lecture d’un nombre presque infini d’articles et de thèses (plus de 100 jurys à son actif !) consignés dans ses fameux cahiers, faisaient alors merveille : c’est ainsi qu’il déposa plus de 35 brevets. Les candidats à l’embauche du Centre de Recherches d’Aubervilliers ont encore souvent en mémoire, de nombreuses années après, leur entretien avec Frédéric : cela se transformait souvent en oral de chimie, où l’exigence de Frédéric était heureusement tempérée par son éternelle bienveillance.

Lignine renouvelable pour des mousses polyuréthane éco-performantes
Des chercheurs de l’Université d’État de Washington ont mis au point une approche innovante visant à substituer 20 % des produits chimiques d’origine fossile dans les mousses par une lignine extraite de manière respectueuse de l’environnement, aboutissant à une mousse bio-sourcée affichant des performances mécaniques comparables à celles des mousses polyuréthane conventionnelles. Exploitant le potentiel de la lignine, deuxième source de carbone renouvelable représentant environ 30 % du carbone non fossile terrestre, l’équipe dirigée par le professeur Xiao Zhang a utilisé un solvant doux et écologique pour extraire une lignine de haute qualité à partir de pins, préservant ainsi son homogénéité structurelle et sa stabilité thermique, atouts essentiels pour l’élaboration de produits à haute valeur ajoutée. Publiée dans la revue ACS Sustainable Chemistry and Engineering, cette recherche s’inscrit dans une démarche visant à pallier les limites du recyclage des plastiques pétroliers, dont les taux restent faibles en raison des coûts de recyclage supérieurs à ceux de la production de matériaux neufs. En proposant une alternative basée sur des ressources naturelles, cette innovation offre la perspective de développer des mousses flexibles entièrement renouvelables et de contribuer à la réduction des déchets plastiques, tout en favorisant une économie circulaire. La validation de cette approche par des partenaires industriels laisse entrevoir des possibilités d’optimisation et de montée en échelle de la production de mousses à base de lignine, soutenue par des financements de la National Science Foundation, des programmes du USDA et de l’Office of Commercialization de WSU.
