Contrôle réversible de la séparation liquide-liquide par moteurs moléculaires rotatifs dans des assemblages supramoléculaires
Des chercheurs ont démontré qu’un monomère moléculaire intégrant un moteur rotatif gouverné par la lumière peut piloter la phase séparée liquide-liquide (LLPS) de ses assemblages supramoléculaires, en passant par plusieurs états non-à-l’équilibre. La rotation unidirectionnelle induite par irradiation et inversion thermique modifie successivement le moment dipolaire et la capacité de liaison hydrogène du moteur, ce qui fait varier la température critique de séparation et entraîne la formation ou la dissolution de gouttelettes aux interfaces internes. Cette stratégie permet une modulation orthogonale — par la température et la lumière — de la morphologie et de la dynamique des phases, ouvrant ainsi une voie nouvelle à la conception de matériaux mous adaptatifs, capables de capturer puis relâcher des composants selon stimuli externes.

Des chercheurs des Instituts de physique de Hefei (Académie chinoise des sciences) ont développé une méthode d’apprentissage profond permettant de classer les microplastiques mixtes avec une précision de 98 %, une avancée majeure pour la surveillance environnementale. Publiée dans le Microchemical Journal, leur approche combine un réseau neuronal convolutionnel à double branche avec un mécanisme d’attention (CBAM), inspiré des systèmes cognitifs humains. Chaque branche du réseau traite différentes composantes spectrales issues de la spectroscopie infrarouge, tandis que le module CBAM identifie successivement les canaux et régions spatiales les plus pertinents avant de générer une carte d’attention pondérée, affinant ainsi les caractéristiques extraites. Cette architecture hybride permet de mieux distinguer les signatures complexes des mélanges de polymères, souvent altérées par les variations de composition. L’analyse visuelle via Grad-CAM met en évidence les zones spectrales clés exploitées par le modèle, apportant une interprétation physique des décisions de l’IA. Cette méthode surpasse largement les algorithmes classiques de classification spectrale, ouvrant la voie à des systèmes automatisés de tri et de suivi des microplastiques dans les milieux aquatiques ou atmosphériques. En intégrant la puissance de l’attention neuronale et de la vision spectrale, cette innovation rapproche l’analyse environnementale d’une surveillance en temps réel, fiable et reproductible des polluants plastiques à l’échelle microscopique.

Transformation réversible CO₂-induite de polymères souples en plastiques rigides et fluorescents
Cette étude démontre la conception de polymères nanostructurés capables de changer d’état mécanique et optique sous l’action du dioxyde de carbone, ouvrant la voie à une valorisation fonctionnelle de ce gaz. Les chercheurs ont élaboré des élastomères constitués de polyéthylèneimine (PEI) vitrifiable par CO₂ et de polydiméthylsiloxane (PDMS) perméable au CO₂, formant une morphologie à séparation de phases nanométrique. L’exposition au CO₂ entraîne la formation de carbamates et d’acides carbamiques qui réticulent densément la phase PEI, transformant instantanément un matériau souple (module de l’ordre du MPa) en plastique rigide (de l’ordre du GPa). Cette vitrification réversible s’accompagne d’une augmentation marquée du module d’élasticité, d’une perte d’adhérence et d’une réduction du frottement de surface, tout en amplifiant fortement la fluorescence bleue du polymère. La combinaison de la diffusion rapide du CO₂ à travers le PDMS et de la réactivité du PEI assure un déclenchement homogène et cyclable du durcissement, stable à température ambiante mais annulé par chauffage. Le phénomène permet également de visualiser et d’enregistrer des motifs luminescents réversibles, suggérant des applications dans les dispositifs de détection, d’affichage et de stockage optique. Ces matériaux multifonctionnels exploitent simultanément la capture, la réactivité et la transduction du CO₂, établissant un concept inédit de polymères « CO₂-curables » capables de convertir une molécule environnementale en stimulus mécanique et optique pour les technologies intelligentes.
Nature Réseaux polymères multicomposants tissés par nœuds intriqués asymétriques de type chaîne-et-trame
Les auteurs introduisent une stratégie de « tissage moléculaire » pour intégrer à l’échelle macromoléculaire deux polymères a priori peu compatibles, un polyuréthane flexible (PU) et une résine époxy rigide (EP). Ils conçoivent d’abord une chaîne de PU portant des ligands tridentates, puis génèrent des nœuds intriqués asymétriques en coordonnant ces sites à des ligands monodentates via des centres palladium(II). Ces nœuds, analogues moléculaires de croisements chaîne–chaîne d’un textile, servent ensuite de points de croissance pour la polymérisation de l’époxy, construisant un réseau WPU-EP dans lequel segments souples et rigides sont entremêlés de façon contrôlée. Les entanglements dynamiques associés à ces nœuds coordonnés assurent à la fois dissipation d’énergie (rupture/réformation des liaisons de coordination, glissement des chaînes) et maintien d’un squelette topologique continu, ce qui se traduit par une combinaison inhabituelle de grande déformabilité, forte résistance mécanique et excellente résilience sous chargements cycliques. La comparaison avec des réseaux références purement covalents ou supramoléculaires montre que l’entrelacement topologique améliore à la fois la compatibilité PU/EP, la stabilité du réseau et l’adhésion structurale, jusqu’à des applications de type adhésifs de haute performance. En modulant la densité de nœuds et la fraction époxy, les propriétés mécaniques et l’amortissement peuvent être ajustés finement, illustrant le potentiel des architectures « tissées » inspirées du macroscopique pour l’ingénierie de réseaux polymères multicomposants à propriétés mécaniques et adhésives sur mesure.
Nature Nanofilms 2D de polyaramide : une barrière moléculaire polymère d’un nouveau genre
Des chercheurs ont mis au point un polymère bidimensionnel innovant, 2DPA-1, dont la synthèse par polycondensation contrôlée produit des feuillets moléculaires ordonnés s’empilant avec un entraxe extrêmement faible de 3,3 Å, supprimant presque tout volume libre interne. Transformé en nanofilms autoportants de 4 à 65 nm, ce matériau atteint une imperméabilité exceptionnelle, avec une perméabilité au N₂ inférieure à 10⁻⁹ Barrer, dépassant de plusieurs ordres de grandeur les meilleures barrières polymères existantes et rejoignant le niveau de matériaux cristallins inorganiques. Ces films conservent leur intégrité durant des tests prolongés sous pression de différents gaz, révélant une robustesse mécanique étonnante au regard de leur finesse extrême. En couche protectrice sur des pérovskites, ils ralentissent notablement la dégradation oxydative, tandis que leurs performances en résonateurs nano-électromécaniques — fréquences de l’ordre du MHz et facteurs de qualité élevés — témoignent d’une rigidité remarquable pour un polymère traitable en solution. L’avancée majeure réside dans la démonstration qu’un polymère organique peut adopter une architecture véritablement 2D tout en restant facilement processable, ouvrant la voie à une nouvelle génération de barrières ultraminces pour l’électronique, les technologies énergétiques et la protection de matériaux sensibles.
Nature Une enzyme bactérienne ouvre la voie à une production d’éthylène renouvelable sans émissions de CO₂
Des chercheurs de l’Institut Max Planck de microbiologie terrestre ont élucidé la structure de l’enzyme méthylthio-alcane réductase, produite par la bactérie Rhodospirillum rubrum, capable de générer de l’éthylène – brique de base de nombreux plastiques – en conditions anaérobies et sans rejet de dioxyde de carbone. Publiée en collaboration avec la RPTU Kaiserslautern, l’étude révèle que cette enzyme utilise de complexes amas fer-soufre de grande taille, jusqu’alors observés uniquement dans les nitrogénases, des enzymes ancestrales responsables de la fixation biologique de l’azote. Cette découverte établit la méthylthio-alcane réductase comme la première enzyme non nitrogénase à recourir à de tels clusters métalliques pour catalyser la réduction d’hydrocarbures à partir de substrats soufrés. L’analyse structurale et spectroscopique montre que ces cofacteurs confèrent à l’enzyme une réactivité exceptionnelle, lui permettant de produire non seulement de l’éthylène mais aussi de l’éthane et du méthane, dans un processus entièrement biologique et économe en énergie. Ces résultats offrent à la fois une piste biotechnologique pour la synthèse durable d’oléfines à partir de ressources renouvelables et un éclairage inédit sur l’évolution des grands clusters métalliques dans les premières enzymes de la Terre. En reconstituant la structure atomique de cette réductase, les chercheurs disposent désormais d’un modèle pour concevoir des catalyseurs bio-inspirés capables de remplacer les procédés pétrochimiques dans la production de plastiques et de carburants.
