Nanofiltration membranaire : une percée pour purifier et recycler les plastiques sans les dégrader
Des chercheurs canadiens proposent une approche inédite de recyclage physique des plastiques fondée sur la nanofiltration membranaire. Publiée dans Communications Chemistry, l’étude démontre qu’il est possible d’éliminer efficacement les additifs et les fragments de polymères dégradés en exploitant un simple principe de séparation par taille moléculaire. Les polymères, dont les masses molaires dépassent 100 000 g/mol, sont des macromolécules bien plus volumineuses que les additifs (200–2000 g/mol). En dissolvant le plastique dans un solvant sélectif puis en le soumettant à une membrane céramique à pores nanométriques, les petites molécules migrent vers le perméat tandis que les chaînes polymères restent dans le rétentat. Appliqué au polystyrène contaminé par l’hexabromocyclododécane (HBCD), un retardateur de flamme interdit, le procédé atteint plus de 90 % d’élimination des contaminants tout en supprimant les chaînes courtes oxydées, améliorant ainsi la qualité du polymère recyclé. Ce système, pilotable par simple ajustement du volume de solvant ou de la pression transmembranaire, permet de contrôler précisément la pureté finale du produit. Compatible avec les polyoléfines, PVC, polyuréthanes et polystyrènes — soit près de 70 % du marché mondial des plastiques —, cette technologie comble l’écart entre recyclage mécanique et recyclage chimique. Sa scalabilité industrielle et sa capacité à générer des résines « quasi vierges » ouvrent la voie à un recyclage circulaire haute valeur ajoutée, limitant les pertes de matière et la dépendance aux ressources fossiles.
Nature Polymérisation induite par vinyl-aza-[3]cumulène : une voie stéréocontrôlée vers des poly(sulfonylamidines) intelligents pour la délivrance de médicaments
Une équipe chinoise a mis au point une nouvelle réaction multicomposante cuivre-catalysée permettant d’accéder à des polymères inédits à base de poly(diényle-N-sulfonylamidines), via des intermédiaires réactifs jusque-là inconnus : les vinyl-aza-[3]cumulènes. Ces espèces hautement électrophiles, formées in situ à partir d’esters, d’amines et d’azotures, induisent une polymérisation régiosélective et stéréocontrôlée donnant exclusivement des motifs diéniques de configuration E. L’approche permet la synthèse de polymères bien définis, thermiquement stables et hydrolysables, dont la dégradation en milieu basique libère des diénamides structurés. Grâce à leur squelette conjugué et à la présence de groupes sulfonylamidine zwitterioniques, ces macromolécules s’auto-assemblent spontanément en nanoparticules chargées négativement en milieu aqueux, capables d’encapsuler la doxorubicine par interactions électrostatiques et hydrophobes. Ces nanoparticules présentent un comportement de libération contrôlé par le pH, libérant plus de 80 % du médicament à pH acide (5–6), ce qui les rend adaptées à la délivrance ciblée en environnement tumoral. L’étude démontre ainsi que la conception rationnelle d’intermédiaires cumulènes azotés ouvre un accès inédit à des polymères fonctionnels stéréodéfinis et stimuli-réactifs, combinant stabilité, dégradabilité et auto-organisation. Cette avancée relie chimie des cumulènes, polymérisation multicomposante et nanomédecine, élargissant le champ des matériaux polymères intelligents pour la vectorisation thérapeutique.

Des chercheurs chinois ont mis au point un composite auto-réparant associant des feuillets bidimensionnels de MXène à une matrice de polyuréthane supramoléculaire, capable de concilier rigidité, résistance à la fatigue et réparabilité rapide — un triptyque rarement atteint dans les matériaux polymères. En reproduisant la structuration multi-échelle des tissus biologiques, le matériau intègre une phase dure continue nanométrique et un réseau tridimensionnel de MXène interconnecté obtenu par auto-assemblage via des liaisons hydrogène médiées par l’acide phytique. Cette organisation hiérarchique dissipe les contraintes sur plusieurs niveaux, limitant la propagation des fissures de fatigue tout en conférant un module d’Young élevé et une stabilité thermomécanique jusqu’à 70 °C. Les simulations de dynamique moléculaire montrent que la densité d’énergie cohésive élevée et la robustesse des liaisons supramoléculaires préservent l’intégrité du réseau sous sollicitations cycliques. Grâce aux propriétés photothermiques du MXène, la réparation des dommages peut être activée par irradiation infrarouge proche, rétablissant en une minute les performances mécaniques initiales. Cette conception multi-échelle dépasse les limites classiques du compromis entre élasticité et endurance, offrant un modèle général pour des polymères bio-inspirés à comportement adaptatif. Nature Une enzyme ancestrale au service d’un éthylène biosourcé
Des chercheurs de l’Université d’État de l’Ohio ont franchi une étape cruciale vers une alternative durable à la production d’éthylène, une molécule-clé pour la fabrication de plastiques. Leur étude, publiée dans Nature Catalysis, révèle la structure et le fonctionnement d’une enzyme bactérienne, la methylthio-alkane réductase (MAR), capable de produire de l’éthylène à partir de composés soufrés organiques. Une lumière sur l’invisible : des canaux à l’échelle angström créés par l’eau UV
Des chercheurs chinois ont mis au point une méthode ingénieuse pour sculpter des canaux minuscules — de l’ordre de l’angström — dans des membranes polymères, grâce à l’action combinée de l’eau et de la lumière ultraviolette. Ce processus, baptisé « UV-water » (UV-W), repose sur la génération de radicaux hydroxyles très réactifs capables de sectionner les chaînes polymères de l’intérieur, ouvrant ainsi des passages ultra-fins pour une séparation ionique d’une précision inédite. En ajustant le temps d’exposition UV, les chercheurs contrôlent la taille et la chimie de ces pores, capables de filtrer finement les ions selon leur charge, comme séparer le lithium du magnésium. Cette technologie pourrait transformer les procédés de dessalement, d’extraction de métaux critiques ou encore d’alimentation en énergie propre, en associant chimie radicalaire et ingénierie membranaire avec une finesse atomique.
