Polymères polyoléfiniques pour sièges automobiles : vers une recyclabilité intégrale et des intérieurs durables
Lors du salon K 2025, Dow a présenté une avancée majeure pour la circularité automobile en introduisant des matériaux à base de polyoléfines destinés aux sièges, combinant performance mécanique, recyclabilité et allègement. Le premier développement, issu de la technologie Infinair 3D Loop, repose sur un élastomère polyoléfinique formé d’un réseau tridimensionnel de filaments fondus et solidifiés par refroidissement aqueux. Initialement conçue pour les matelas, cette structure confère aux coussins de siège une résilience durable et une perméabilité totale à l’air, tout en permettant un recyclage mécanique complet en fin de vie. En collaboration avec Lear, cette technologie commercialisée sous le nom FlexAir offre une alternative au polyuréthane conventionnel, réduisant significativement les émissions de CO₂, la masse des sièges et les composés organiques volatils. Le second matériau, Evoair POE Leather, propose une alternative synthétique au cuir à base de polyoléfine, plus légère, inodore, stable en couleur et résistante aux conditions climatiques, tout en éliminant l’usage d’origine animale. Utilisé notamment pour les housses et les protections d’airbags, ce matériau associe confort sensoriel et durabilité environnementale. Plasma atmosphérique pour l’activation des polymères fluorés et non fluorés : vers une adhésion optimisée et écologique
Des chercheurs ont comparé la modification de surface de deux polymères emblématiques — le polyéthylène (PE) et le polytétrafluoroéthylène (PTFE) — à l’aide d’un plasma d’air à barrière diélectrique de surface (SDBD), une technologie atmosphérique capable d’activer chimiquement les surfaces sans altérer le matériau en profondeur. Ce traitement génère des espèces réactives d’oxygène et d’azote qui greffent des groupes fonctionnels polaires tout en augmentant la rugosité microscopique des surfaces. Les analyses spectroscopiques et de mouillabilité révèlent que, si les deux polymères deviennent plus hydrophiles, le PTFE présente une activation bien plus marquée grâce à un mécanisme combinant défluoration partielle et oxydation, là où le PE subit surtout une simple oxydation de surface. Cette transformation chimique favorise la création de liaisons adhésives plus fortes et durables, confirmée par des tests mécaniques d’adhérence. L’approche SDBD offre ainsi une méthode propre, économique et sans solvants pour améliorer la compatibilité de matériaux difficiles à coller, tout en permettant un contrôle précis des propriétés de surface. Ces avancées ouvrent la voie à de nouvelles stratégies de fonctionnalisation des polymères fluorés dans les domaines des dispositifs biomédicaux, des composites haute performance et des revêtements techniques, tout en réduisant l’impact environnemental des traitements chimiques traditionnels.
Nature Hydrogels photo-redox : la lumière au service de l’oxydoréduction et du mouvement de la matière
Des chercheurs ont conçu un hydrogel polymère capable de traduire un signal lumineux en transformation chimique et mécanique, ouvrant une voie inédite vers des matériaux actifs à commande optique. Le cœur de cette innovation réside dans un interrupteur moléculaire bisthioxanthylidène intégré à la matrice, dont la conformation et le potentiel redox varient sous irradiation. Cette architecture permet à la lumière de contrôler avec une extrême précision les réactions d’oxydation locales, provoquant des changements réversibles de couleur, de fluorescence et de volume sans nécessiter de catalyseur externe. L’intelligence artificielle au service des lubrifiants extrêmes
Des chercheurs iraniens ont développé un modèle d’apprentissage automatique capable de prédire avec une précision inédite la viscosité des huiles perfluoropolyéthers (PFPE), des lubrifiants utilisés dans les environnements extrêmes de l’aéronautique, de l’électronique ou du spatial. Ces polymères fluorés, prisés pour leur stabilité thermique et chimique, sont essentiels au bon fonctionnement d’équipements soumis à de fortes contraintes.
Plutôt que de recourir à des mesures expérimentales longues et coûteuses, l’équipe a entraîné quatre modèles d’intelligence artificielle à partir de données de température, densité et longueur moyenne de chaîne polymère. Le modèle de régression par processus gaussiens (GPR) s’est distingué avec une précision quasi parfaite (R² = 0,999), surpassant largement les corrélations empiriques classiques comme celles de Vogel-Fulcher-Tamman.
Au-delà de la performance prédictive, le modèle a su reproduire les lois physiques gouvernant le comportement des PFPE : une viscosité qui augmente avec la densité et diminue avec la température. En réduisant la dépendance aux essais expérimentaux, cette approche ouvre la voie à une conception plus rapide et plus durable de lubrifiants haute performance, indispensables aux technologies de pointe.
