Un catalyseur au nickel ouvre la voie au recyclage direct des plastiques mélangés
Des chercheurs de Northwestern University ont mis au point un catalyseur moléculaire à base de nickel, peu coûteux et abondant, capable d’hydrogénolyser sélectivement les polyoléfines (PE, PP) en huiles et cires valorisables, sans étape préalable de tri. Contrairement aux catalyseurs nobles traditionnels, ce système opère à température et pression réduites, avec une activité multipliée par dix et une stabilité remarquable, même en présence de contaminants comme le PVC. De manière surprenante, le PVC accélère même la réaction, ouvrant des perspectives inédites pour l’upcycling des flux plastiques mixtes, y compris ceux jusqu’ici jugés « non recyclables ». Cette approche pourrait transformer la gestion mondiale des polyoléfines, qui représentent plus de 220 Mt/an et dont moins de 10 % sont actuellement recyclés.
Organogels polyuréthanes auto-cicatrisants à réponse mécano-fluorescente
Une équipe taïwanaise a conçu des organogels PU intégrant des nanocristaux de cellulose et des molécules mécaniquement entrelacées (MIMs) modifiées par des fluorophores DPAC. Ces réseaux affichent une extensibilité exceptionnelle (jusqu’à 4 600 %, soit ×46), une ténacité de 142 MJ/m³ et une auto-réparation rapide à température ambiante (>90 % des propriétés restaurées en 10 min). Leur fluorescence varie selon la contrainte appliquée, passant de l’orange (603 nm, état relâché) au bleu (451 nm, état étiré), grâce au glissement réversible des MIMs agissant comme « muscles moléculaires ». Ces matériaux multifonctionnels associent auto-cicatrisation, détection optique des contraintes et potentiel de mise à l’échelle, ouvrant des perspectives pour les peaux électroniques, la robotique souple et l’anti-contrefaçon.

Techniques de l’Ingénieur Nvirocap : un bouchon PET pour aller vers le monomatérial
La société australienne Nviro1 a mis au point Nvirocap, un bouchon breveté entièrement en PET qui peut être recyclé avec la bouteille sans séparation. Ce design surmonte les obstacles techniques longtemps associés aux bouchons en PET, comme le démoulage et l’étanchéité. Léger et testé jusqu’à 175 psi, il convient aux boissons plates ou gazeuses, aux huiles et aux détergents. Son système limite aussi l’abrasion et donc la formation de microplastiques. Compatible avec les lignes existantes, il répond aux exigences réglementaires de l’économie circulaire et aux attentes des marques en quête de solutions monomatériales.

Microplastiques et dispositifs médicaux entre bénéfices sanitaires et risques émergents
De récentes études montrent que les dispositifs médicaux à usage unique (seringues, perfusions, poches sanguines) peuvent libérer des microplastiques lors de la stérilisation ou directement dans le sang via leur usage (ex. perfusions, PCI). Les matériaux étudiés révèlent que le PP et le PS sont particulièrement fragilisés, libérant davantage de particules que le PVC. Des travaux indiquent que ces fragments pourraient altérer systèmes reproductif, neurologique et cardiovasculaire chez l’animal, mais les effets réels sur la santé humaine restent incertains, faute de méthodes standardisées et d’évaluations robustes. Réglementairement, seules les microbilles cosmétiques sont bannies aux États-Unis (depuis 2015), et l’UE encadre progressivement les microparticules polymères via REACH. Malgré ces signaux d’alerte, les plastiques conservent une place incontournable en médecine par leur biocompatibilité, leur rôle dans la prévention des infections et leur coût maîtrisé. La tension entre sécurité sanitaire immédiate et pollution microplastique illustre ainsi un dilemme majeur de l’ère du tout-jetable.
Entre résilience et incertitudes pour l’industrie américaine des plastiques
Lors du briefing 2025 de la Plastics Industry Association, les dirigeants ont souligné l’impact des récents abaissements des taux directeurs de la Fed, qui devraient soutenir la construction et d’autres marchés clés. Mais l’avenir reste lié à l’évolution des politiques commerciales : les tarifs sur l’acier et l’aluminium, élargis en 2025, continuent de peser sur un secteur où près de 75 % des machines sont importées. Les experts anticipent toutefois une résolution partielle dès 2026, jugeant ces tarifs intenables à long terme. Parallèlement, la mise en place de lois EPR dans plusieurs États devrait générer des investissements significatifs dans les infrastructures de recyclage. Malgré un climat d’incertitude, le secteur affiche encore une forte contribution économique avec 551 milliards de dollars de livraisons en 2024 et 1,7 million d’emplois, confirmant sa place de 8e industrie manufacturière américaine.
