Frank Leibfarth, pionnier de la chimie des polymères pour la durabilité
Frank Leibfarth (Université de Caroline du Nord à Chapel Hill), finaliste 2025 du Blavatnik National Award, est reconnu pour ses travaux novateurs en chimie des polymères appliqués aux enjeux environnementaux. Il a mis au point : (1) des méthodes de fonctionnalisation sélective des liaisons C–H pour l’upcycling de plastiques en matériaux plus performants, (2) une nouvelle classe de thermoplastiques recyclables issus de monomères biosourcés grâce à des catalyseurs stéréosélectifs, et (3) des résines polymères à haute affinité capables de capturer les polluants éternels (PFAS) dans l’eau. Ces approches allient précision moléculaire et déploiement à grande échelle, influençant les politiques publiques, inspirant des pilotes industriels et donnant naissance à des applications commerciales via la start-up Sorbenta Inc.

Des eaux usées municipales transformées en bioplastiques PHAs
Le projet KoalAplan, mené par le Fraunhofer IGB et ses partenaires, vise à transformer les stations d’épuration en bioraffineries capables de récupérer ammonium, hydrogène et surtout polyhydroxyalcanoates (PHAs). À partir d’un hydrolysat riche en acides organiques (acétique, propionique, butyrique) issu de la fermentation des boues, les chercheurs ont optimisé la production de poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalérate) grâce à Cupriavidus necator et un procédé de perfusion avec rétention cellulaire. Le copolymère obtenu (≈10 % HV) présente une flexibilité et une mise en forme supérieures aux homopolymères. Cette approche valorise jusqu’à 97 % du carbone, réduit les émissions de CO₂ et ouvre la voie à des applications allant de l’emballage biodégradable aux implants médicaux.

Des taches de sueur et d’aliments effacées par la lumière bleue
Des chercheurs rapportent dans ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering qu’une lumière LED bleue intense peut éliminer les taches jaunes de sueur, d’huiles et de pigments alimentaires (bêta-carotène, lycopène) sur coton, soie ou polyester, sans endommager les fibres. Le procédé exploite l’oxygène de l’air comme oxydant naturel, évitant l’usage de peroxyde ou d’UV qui peuvent fragiliser les textiles. Les tests montrent que la photodécoloration par LED bleue surpasse le peroxyde d’hydrogène et empêche la formation de sous-produits colorés. Cette méthode durable ouvre des perspectives pour des solutions d’entretien textiles plus respectueuses des matériaux et de l’environnement, en attente d’évaluations de sécurité et de tenue des couleurs avant une possible application domestique ou industrielle.

Une coopération franco-japonaise dynamique autour des polymères
Relancée après la pandémie, la collaboration entre le Groupe français des polymères (GFP) et la Société japonaise des sciences polymères (SPSJ) s’intensifie, avec un second colloque bilatéral organisé en juillet 2025 à Kitakyūshū. Portée par des chercheurs de Montpellier (ICGM) et d’universités japonaises, cette coopération met en avant des approches complémentaires et vise des thématiques d’avenir comme les vitrimères, le recyclage et la fin de vie des polymères. La France y est reconnue comme un acteur scientifique de premier plan.
Vers de nouveaux polymères biodégradables grâce aux cétones cycliques acétales
Des chercheurs de l’Université Doshisha ont étudié des cétones cycliques acétales (CKA), monomères capables de subir une polymérisation radicalaire par ouverture de cycle (RROP), afin de concevoir des polyesters dégradables. En caractérisant un monomère substitué (5a) par RMN et tests de biodégradabilité (OCDE 301F), ils ont montré un taux de dégradation de 20 % (contre 40 % pour la cellulose) et une faible rétention de cycle (<10 %). L’introduction d’un modèle cinétique basé sur la DFT a permis de relier structure, réactivité et dégradabilité. Ces résultats ouvrent la voie à la conception rationnelle de polymères biodégradables pour l’emballage, l’agriculture et le biomédical.

Des déchets plastiques au captage du CO₂ : une avancée prometteuse avec le matériau BAETA
Des chimistes de l’Université de Copenhague ont développé un procédé d’upcycling du PET (bouteilles, textiles) en un nouveau matériau baptisé BAETA, capable de capturer efficacement le CO₂. Ce MOF organique modifié, issu de PET dégradé et fonctionnalisé par de l’éthylènediamine, présente une forte affinité pour le CO₂ et une bonne régénérabilité thermique. Stable de la température ambiante jusqu’à 150 °C, il est parfaitement adapté aux flux chauds des usines industrielles. Ce procédé doux, peu énergivore, cible les déchets plastiques non recyclables, et ouvre la voie à une double valorisation environnementale : dépollution plastique et atténuation climatique.
