Un catalyseur au cuivre transforme le CO₂ en polymères fonctionnels sous conditions douces
Au Songshan Lake Materials Laboratory, des chercheurs ont développé une méthode de polymérisation multicomposant catalysée par CuCl/PPh₃ permettant d’incorporer efficacement le CO₂ dans des poly(alkynoates) à température ambiante et pression atmosphérique. Les polymères obtenus présentent des masses molaires élevées (jusqu’à 94 000 g·mol⁻¹), une large compatibilité de monomères et des rendements proches de 99 %. Ces matériaux, solubles et facilement post-fonctionnalisables, offrent des applications variées (capteurs fluorescents, sondes biomédicales, emballages durables). Cette approche associe séquestration du carbone et chimie verte, ouvrant la voie à une valorisation industrielle du CO₂ dans une logique d’économie circulaire du carbone.
Des microplastiques identifiés pour la première fois dans des tissus cérébraux humains
La neuropathologiste Elaine Bearer (Université du Nouveau-Mexique) a mis au point une méthode de microscopie confocale permettant de visualiser des micro- et nanoplastiques dans des cerveaux humains, notamment de patients atteints de démence. Ses analyses montrent que les tissus associés à la démence contiennent environ cinq fois plus de microplastiques que les échantillons témoins. Les particules observées, de taille nanométrique, échappaient jusqu’ici aux techniques classiques d’imagerie. Prochaine étape : tenter de les détecter in vivo par IRM et spectroscopie RMN, afin de corréler charge plastique cérébrale et pathologies neurodégénératives.
Vers des plastiques durables grâce à des briques moléculaires soufrées prédictives
Une équipe internationale menée par l’Université de Bayreuth a établi une règle prédictive permettant d’identifier quels monomères soufrés conduisent à des polymères propres et bien structurés. Le soufre introduit dans la chaîne polymère fragilise les liaisons C–S, facilitant la dégradabilité sous conditions douces. L’étude, publiée dans Angewandte Chemie, met en avant le sulfure de carbonyle (COS) comme brique idéale : il polymérise de façon fiable avec peu de catalyseur et génère peu de sous-produits. Ces travaux ouvrent la voie à la synthèse standardisée de polymères soufrés durables et recyclables.

Un bioplastique à base de protéines de lait pour l’emballage alimentaire
Des chercheurs de Flinders University ont développé un film biodégradable en combinant caséinate de calcium (protéine du lait), amidon modifié et nanoclay de bentonite, renforcé par du glycérol et du PVA pour améliorer résistance et plasticité. Ce nanocomposite se dégrade totalement en environ 13 semaines en sol, tout en offrant de bonnes propriétés mécaniques et barrières. Conçu à partir d’ingrédients peu coûteux et abondants, il constitue une alternative durable aux plastiques à usage unique dans l’emballage alimentaire, avec un potentiel d’intégration dans l’économie circulaire.
Des déchets alimentaires transformés en bioplastiques sans émissions de gaz à effet de serre
Des chercheurs de l’Université de Binghamton (USA) utilisent la bactérie C. necator pour convertir des déchets alimentaires fermentés en PHB, un bioplastique de la famille des PHA. Grâce à une fermentation lactique anaérobie, ce procédé ne génère ni CO₂ ni CH₄, tout en produisant de l’acide lactique, précurseur de polymères biodégradables. Économiquement attractif, le procédé valorise des substrats peu coûteux, et offre une solution industrialisable à la fois pour réduire les déchets organiques et produire des plastiques biosourcés.
Techniques de l’Ingénieur Un catalyseur au nickel révolutionne le recyclage des plastiques polyoléfines
Des chimistes de l’Université Northwestern ont développé un catalyseur à base de nickel cationique capable de dépolymériser sélectivement les polyoléfines (PE, PP) en huiles et cires valorisables, sans tri préalable. Cette approche fonctionne même en présence de contaminants comme le PVC, qui améliore paradoxalement l’activité catalytique. Ce catalyseur moléculaire à site unique, stable et peu énergivore, opère à température et pression réduites, avec une sélectivité inédite des liaisons C–C. Il pourrait rendre le recyclage chimique mixte des plastiques économiquement viable, transformant des déchets complexes en ressources à haute valeur ajoutée.
