L’imagerie moléculaire révèle des défauts cachés dans les polymères électroniques
Des chercheurs ont utilisé la microscopie à effet tunnel (STM) couplée à l’électrospray deposition (ESD) pour observer au niveau moléculaire des polymères conducteurs issus de la condensation aldolique, une méthode de synthèse réputée verte et sans métaux. Cette analyse a mis en évidence deux types de défauts : des défauts de couplage, liés à des liaisons mal orientées créant des “coudes” dans la chaîne, et des défauts de séquence, perturbant l’ordre des motifs répétés. Ces irrégularités freinent le transport des électrons et peuvent limiter les performances en électronique flexible ou en dispositifs thermoélectriques. En optimisant la purification des monomères ou en combinant la condensation aldolique avec d’autres voies de polymérisation, l’équipe a démontré qu’il était possible de réduire fortement ces défauts et d’obtenir des polymères aux propriétés électroniques plus fiables, ouvrant la voie à des plastiques conducteurs à la fois performants et durables.

Quand l’IA découvre des molécules qui rendent les plastiques plus résistants
Des chercheurs du MIT et de l’université Duke ont utilisé l’intelligence artificielle pour accélérer la recherche de nouvelles molécules capables de renforcer les polymères. Ils se sont intéressés aux ferrocenes, des composés organométalliques où un atome de fer est pris en sandwich entre deux cycles carbonés. Intégrés comme mécanophores — ces maillons moléculaires qui réagissent à une contrainte mécanique — certains ferrocenes agissent comme des points de rupture contrôlés. Au lieu de propager une fissure dans tout le matériau, ces liaisons plus faibles obligent la fracture à contourner les zones solides, ce qui augmente la résistance globale. Grâce à un réseau de neurones entraîné sur plus de 5 000 ferrocenes issus de bases de données, l’équipe a identifié une centaine de candidats prometteurs. Testé dans une matrice de polyacrylate, l’un d’eux, le m-TMS-Fc, a permis d’obtenir un plastique quatre fois plus résistant à la déchirure qu’un polymère classique. Cette stratégie ouvre la voie à des plastiques durables, dont la longévité accrue pourrait réduire la production et donc les déchets, tout en élargissant le champ des mécanophores utilisables, y compris pour des applications comme les capteurs de contrainte ou les catalyseurs activables mécaniquement.

Un plastique intelligent auto-cicatrisant plus résistant que l’acier
Des chercheurs de Texas A&M University ont révélé les propriétés exceptionnelles d’un copolyester thermodurcissable aromatique (ATSP) renforcé de fibres de carbone. Ce vitrimer associe la stabilité des thermodurcissables et la flexibilité des thermoplastiques, donnant naissance à un matériau plus léger que l’aluminium et plusieurs fois plus résistant que l’acier. Sa particularité réside dans sa capacité à se réparer et à retrouver sa forme après un dommage, grâce à des échanges de liaisons activés par la chaleur. Lors de tests de fatigue cyclique, le matériau endommagé a retrouvé presque toute sa résistance après deux cycles de chauffage à 280 °C. ATSP est également recyclable : il peut être broyé, remodelé et réutilisé sans perte significative de performances, ce qui en fait un candidat prometteur pour l’aéronautique, la défense et l’automobile. Cette avancée ouvre la voie à une nouvelle génération de composites polymères adaptatifs, capables d’évoluer et de durer dans des environnements extrêmes.

Un revêtement anti-adhésif inspiré des plumes pourrait remplacer le Teflon
Des chercheurs de l’Université de Toronto ont mis au point un nouveau matériau anti-adhésif qui rivalise avec l’efficacité du Teflon tout en réduisant drastiquement l’usage des PFAS, ces « polluants éternels » connus pour leur persistance et leurs effets toxiques. La stratégie repose sur une chimie innovante baptisée nanoscale fletching, qui reproduit à l’échelle moléculaire l’organisation de plumes de flèches. De courtes chaînes de polydiméthylsiloxane (PDMS, un polymère silicone biocompatible) sont fixées en « brosses » et terminées par la plus petite molécule PFAS possible (un seul carbone avec trois fluorines). Cette architecture confère une forte répulsion à l’eau et aux graisses, avec des performances comparables aux revêtements fluorés classiques mais sans bioaccumulation. Testée sur des textiles, la surface atteint un grade 6 sur l’échelle de l’American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists, au niveau des standards industriels actuels. Cette avancée ouvre la voie à des alternatives plus sûres pour les revêtements anti-adhésifs de la cuisine, des emballages ou encore des textiles techniques, avec l’objectif ultime de se passer totalement des PFAS tout en dépassant les performances du Teflon.

De l’icône futuriste au fléau environnemental, l’histoire des chaises en plastique
Nées aux États-Unis dans les années 1930 avec l’essor des polymères acryliques et renforcées par les pénuries de matériaux pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, les chaises en plastique se sont imposées comme symboles de modernité et de démocratisation du design. Les premières créations en fibre de verre de Charles et Ray Eames ou d’Eero Saarinen ont marqué l’âge d’or des années 1950-60, mêlant formes futuristes et surfaces brillantes, rendues possibles par la mise en œuvre de polymères thermodurcissables. Mais la crise pétrolière des années 1970 a révélé la dépendance de ces matériaux aux hydrocarbures, tandis que la fragilité des premiers plastiques ternissait leur image. L’injection de polymères thermoplastiques comme le polypropylène dans les années 1990 a relancé la tendance, mais les limites du recyclage mécanique ont rapidement souligné l’impact écologique massif : à peine 9 % des 8,3 milliards de tonnes de plastiques produits en 2020 ont réellement été recyclés. Aujourd’hui, designers et industriels explorent des alternatives intégrant des plastiques recyclés ou biosourcés (plantes, algues, CO₂), comme la Bell Chair de Magis fabriquée à partir de 2,8 kg de déchets plastiques. Pourtant, le mélange de fibres et de polymères rend encore le recyclage incertain. L’avenir de la chaise en plastique repose sur une transition accélérée vers des polymères entièrement renouvelables et une véritable économie circulaire, conciliant design, fonctionnalité et durabilité.

Vers une production optimisée de bioplastiques à partir du gaz naturel
Une équipe du KAIST, en collaboration avec Stanford, a étudié l’effet de l’éthane, composant majeur du gaz naturel, sur le métabolisme de la bactérie méthanotrophe Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b, spécialisée dans l’oxydation du méthane. Bien qu’incapable d’utiliser l’éthane comme substrat de croissance, l’organisme le co-oxyde via la méthane monooxygénase particulaire, produisant de l’acétate. Cet intermédiaire réduit la croissance et la consommation de méthane, mais stimule l’accumulation de polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), un bioplastique biodégradable. Les chercheurs ont montré que l’apport de pouvoir réducteur externe amplifie la consommation d’éthane sans freiner l’oxydation du méthane, révélant une compétition intracellulaire pour les ressources métaboliques. Ces résultats ouvrent la voie à l’exploitation contrôlée de mélanges méthane/éthane pour accroître la production durable de biopolymères à partir de gaz naturel.
