Les géants du CPG s’allient pour recycler les films plastiques souples
Six grandes entreprises de biens de consommation — General Mills, Mars, Mondelēz, Nestlé, Hill’s Pet Nutrition et PepsiCo — viennent de créer l’US Flexible Film Initiative (USFFI), une organisation à but non lucratif visant à développer des solutions de recyclage à grande échelle pour les emballages plastiques souples. Ces matériaux, essentiels à la conservation des aliments mais rarement intégrés aux filières municipales, représentent l’une des plus grandes catégories d’emballages plastiques. L’initiative, lancée en Californie, se distingue en finançant directement les coûts opérationnels des centres de tri et recycleurs, au-delà des seuls investissements en équipements. L’objectif est de démontrer la faisabilité du recyclage industriel de ces films, en s’appuyant sur des partenariats avec MRFs, recycleurs et transformateurs. En établissant des contrats pluriannuels, l’USFFI entend créer une véritable boucle circulaire pour cette fraction de plastiques jusqu’ici considérée comme quasi impossible à recycler.

Un hydrogel polymère qui colle sous l’eau avec une force record
Des chercheurs de l’Université de Hokkaido ont mis au point un hydrogel polymère capable d’adhérer instantanément et de manière répétée sous l’eau avec une résistance dépassant 1 MPa. Inspirée des protéines adhésives présentes chez des organismes marins et viraux, la structure du réseau polymère a été optimisée grâce à l’analyse de 25 000 séquences protéiques et au machine learning. Les chercheurs ont synthétisé 180 formulations dont certaines surpassent largement les performances connues. À taille d’un timbre, un échantillon pourrait soutenir environ 63 kg. Les tests ont démontré une efficacité remarquable en conditions réelles, avec un canard en caoutchouc fixé sur un rocher résistant aux marées et un trou de 20 mm dans une conduite colmaté instantanément. Cette approche bio-inspirée ouvre des perspectives pour des adhésifs polymères dédiés au biomédical, aux réparations sous-marines et aux environnements extrêmes.

Un polymère conducteur d’électricité plus performant grâce à l’acide hyaluronique
Des chercheurs de l’Université La Trobe ont développé un polymère conducteur ultrafin, flexible et transparent en appliquant directement de l’acide hyaluronique sur une surface dorée. Cette approche, baptisée tethered dopant templating, permet de contrôler précisément la structure du film 2D PEDOT et d’obtenir une conductivité comparable à celle des métaux, avec une reproductibilité bien supérieure aux méthodes classiques. Ce matériau ouvre la voie à des capteurs portables et dispositifs médicaux plus fiables, tout en étant plus simple et économique à produire.
Un polyuréthane durable issu de la lignine végétale et du CO₂
Des chercheurs de la FAMU-FSU College of Engineering ont démontré qu’il est possible de produire un polyuréthane sans recourir aux isocyanates toxiques habituellement utilisés. En combinant la lignine, polymère naturel abondant dans les parois cellulaires des plantes et sous-produit de l’industrie papetière, avec du dioxyde de carbone capté, ils ont obtenu un matériau aussi résistant et thermiquement stable que les polyuréthanes conventionnels, mais biodégradable et bien plus simple à fabriquer. Ce procédé réduit le nombre d’étapes de synthèse, diminue la consommation d’énergie et facilite la mise en forme du polymère, ouvrant la voie à une industrialisation compétitive. Au-delà de la valorisation d’un coproduit peu exploité, cette approche illustre comment la chimie verte peut transformer des déchets végétaux et du CO₂ en polymères fonctionnels, conciliant performance, sécurité et durabilité.

Un « jelly ice » réutilisable et compostable pour remplacer la glace fondante
Des chercheurs de l’Université de Californie à Davis ont conçu un matériau innovant, baptisé jelly ice, capable de conserver les aliments ou les médicaments au frais sans fondre en eau contaminante. Constitué à 90 % d’eau et de gélatine, ce biopolymère forme un hydrogel dont les pores retiennent l’eau au cours des cycles de congélation/décongélation. Contrairement à la glace classique, aucune fuite n’apparaît et le matériau garde jusqu’à 80 % de l’efficacité thermique d’un glaçon de même taille. Lavable et réutilisable, il peut être produit en blocs ou sous formes adaptées aux besoins, tout en étant compostable. Des tests montrent même que son compost améliore la croissance de plants de tomate. En supprimant l’usage de gaines plastiques des packs réfrigérants et en évitant la génération de microplastiques, ce jelly ice ouvre des perspectives en chaîne du froid alimentaire, transport médical ou biotechnologies. Cette approche illustre le potentiel des biopolymères naturels comme la gélatine ou les protéines végétales pour concevoir des matériaux fonctionnels, sûrs pour l’alimentation et compatibles avec une économie circulaire.
