Un bioplastique disparaît dans les abysses grâce à la dégradation microbienne
Un polyester biosourcé à base de lactate, le LAHB, a montré une biodégradation efficace en conditions réelles dans les grands fonds marins (855 m de profondeur, 3,6 °C), contrairement au PLA qui demeure intact. Après 13 mois d’immersion, plus de 80 % de la masse du LAHB a été dégradée, sous l’action de biofilms microbiens. Des genres bactériens comme Colwellia ou UBA7957 produisent des enzymes extracellulaires (PhaZ2, hydrolases) capables de dépolymériser le polymère en monomères métabolisables (3HB, lactate), minéralisés ensuite en CO₂ et H₂O. Cette démonstration in situ valide le LAHB comme alternative marine-compatible aux plastiques classiques, soutenant les approches de bioéconomie circulaire.

Un outil de sélection de solvant améliore la performance des polymères thermoélectriques
Des chercheurs de KAUST ont développé un modèle prédictif basé sur l’anisotropie induite par les forces moléculaires pour optimiser l’orientation cristalline des films polymères utilisés dans les dispositifs thermoélectriques organiques. En sélectionnant le solvant le plus adapté parmi 10 000, ils ont accru d’un facteur 20 la puissance produite par un polythiophène dopé, simplement en remplaçant l’ortho-dichlorobenzène par le chlorobenzène. Cette approche ouvre la voie à une ingénierie plus rationnelle des dispositifs électroniques à base de polymères conducteurs.

La sandale Méduse : une icône française en PVC injecté toujours d’actualité
Conçue en 1946 à partir de polychlorure de vinyle (PVC) injecté, la sandale Méduse illustre parfaitement la durabilité et la pertinence industrielle d’un polymère longtemps décrié mais toujours utilisé. Fabriquée par moulage monobloc, elle met en œuvre un PVC souple formulé sans phtalates, offrant à la fois flexibilité, résistance mécanique et excellente tenue à l’eau. Relancée en 2003 par l’entreprise familiale Humeau-Beaupréau, experte en injection plastique depuis 1905, la Méduse bénéficie aujourd’hui d’une formulation optimisée intégrant jusqu’à 100 tonnes de PVC recyclé par an, réutilisé en boucle dans les chaînes de production. Cette maîtrise de la rhéologie du matériau, combinée à des moules de précision, permet la fabrication d’articles injectés complexes comme les sandales à picots, les sabots, ou les bottes co-marquées Plasticana intégrant des charges végétales à base de fibres de chanvre. Forte de son engagement dans la charte Innoshoe, l’entreprise garantit également l’innocuité chimique de ses polymères et anticipe les exigences réglementaires européennes en matière de substances dangereuses. Produite en majorité en France et partiellement en Tunisie, la Méduse est un exemple emblématique de polymère grand public combinant performance, économie circulaire et design intemporel.
L’Usine Nouvelle Des masques usagés transformés en nanocomposites thermoconducteurs et blindés électromagnétiquement
Une équipe sino-australienne a mis au point une stratégie d’upcycling des masques en polypropylène post-COVID pour produire des films PP@graphène aux propriétés record. Obtenus par auto-assemblage électrostatique et pressage à chaud, ces nanocomposites affichent une conductivité thermique de 87 W·m⁻¹·K⁻¹ et une efficacité de blindage EMI de 88 dB, dépassant les exigences pour l’électronique avancée tout en valorisant un flux de déchets massif de manière rentable et circulaire.
Valoriser les résidus agricoles et alimentaires en bioplastiques et polyuréthanes durables
Le projet européen PROMOFER, coordonné par AIMPLAS, vise à transformer des résidus agroalimentaires et lignocellulosiques (amidon déclassé, lactosérum, eaux usées, pailles, tailles) en deux composés biosourcés à forte valeur ajoutée : le PHBV, un bioplastique biodégradable, et le 2,3-BDO, précurseur de polyuréthanes durables. Le projet s’attaque aux verrous de la fermentation en optimisant l’hydrolyse enzymatique, les souches microbiennes et la production d’acides gras volatils, tout en préparant le passage à l’échelle industrielle. PROMOFER mobilise 13 partenaires jusqu’en 2028.
