Recyclage plastique : les visites d’usines restaurent la confiance du public
Aux États-Unis, l’initiative Recycling in Action organisée par l’Association of Plastic Recyclers a permis à plus de 36 centres de tri de plastiques de recevoir le public durant le mois de mai 2025. Résultat : 85 % des visiteurs estiment que le recyclage fonctionne mieux qu’ils ne le pensaient et 70 % se sentent désormais capables de trier plus efficacement. En découvrant in situ les étapes de tri, de broyage et de revalorisation, les participants ont pu constater l’efficacité des infrastructures et des technologies utilisées, et corriger des erreurs fréquentes comme le dépôt de plastiques souillés ou ensachés. Pour les industriels, ces portes ouvertes sont aussi l’occasion de montrer leurs efforts technologiques et de se positionner comme acteurs de l’économie circulaire.

Des polymères semiconducteurs à l’origine de nos écrans OLED et au-delà
Pionnier des polymères conjugués, Samson A. Jenekhe a ouvert la voie aux OLEDs commerciaux en optimisant leur rendement lumineux grâce à des structures moléculaires désordonnées empêchant l’extinction de la luminescence. Il a aussi développé des acceptors non fulleréniques plus efficaces pour les cellules photovoltaïques organiques, atteignant 18 % de rendement. Son approche durable et orientée vers les procédés en solution prépare aussi l’avenir des TFT flexibles intégrables aux textiles.
Une surface antiadhésive inspirée des flèches allie performance et sécurité
Des chercheurs de l’université de Toronto ont développé un revêtement hydrophobe et oléophobe performant à base de PDMS modifié, contenant uniquement de très courtes chaînes fluorées. Par une approche chimique baptisée « nanoscale fletching », des chaînes de polydiméthylsiloxane terminées par un groupement trifluorométhyle ont été greffées sur une matrice silicone, formant une structure rappelant les plumes d’une flèche à l’échelle nanométrique. Cette microarchitecture améliore la répulsion des huiles tout en utilisant des PFAS à faible impact toxicologique, évitant les chaînes longues bioaccumulables. Testé sur textile, le revêtement atteint un indice de 6 selon l’échelle de l’American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists, équivalant aux revêtements à base de PFAS classiques. Cette innovation ouvre la voie à des surfaces fonctionnelles plus sûres pour les applications domestiques et industrielles, sans compromettre la performance antiadhésive.

Un plastique biodégradable et coloré sans pigments ni colorants
Des chercheurs ont mis au point un plastique à base d’hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC) dont la couleur provient d’un phénomène de couleur structurelle. En modifiant la formulation avec de l’acide citrique et de la poudre d’encre de seiche, ils ont obtenu des matériaux solides, brillamment colorés, entièrement biodégradables et solubles dans l’eau. Ces plastiques conservent des propriétés mécaniques équivalentes à celles des plastiques classiques, tout en étant facilement recyclables et imprimables en 3D. La couleur provient de l’organisation nanostructurée interne du matériau, ce qui évite l’usage de colorants chimiques difficiles à éliminer et parfois toxiques. Cette stratégie ouvre la voie à une nouvelle génération de plastiques durables, esthétiques et écoconçus.
Recycler le Teflon par faisceau d’électrons : une voie vers le gaz
Des chercheurs japonais ont mis au point une méthode innovante pour recycler le polytétrafluoroéthylène (PTFE) en le convertissant intégralement en gaz via une irradiation par faisceau d’électrons combinée à un chauffage à 370 °C. Ce procédé, deux fois moins énergivore que la pyrolyse classique, permet de récupérer des fluorocarbures gazeux réutilisables, ouvrant la voie à une valorisation circulaire des plastiques fluorés dits « éternels » comme le Teflon.

Une enzyme modifiée surpasse le recyclage thermique des bouteilles et textiles en PET
Une équipe japonaise a mis au point l’enzyme PET2-21M capable de dépolymériser 95 % du PET bouteille en 24 h à 60 °C, soit une efficacité supérieure à celle de la référence LCC-ICCG, qui nécessite 72 °C. Une autre variante, PET2-14M-6Hot, montre une forte activité sur les textiles complexes PET/coton et PET/polyuréthane, traditionnellement peu recyclables. Ces hydrolases modifiées ouvrent la voie à un recyclage enzymatique efficace à température modérée, y compris pour les fibres mélangées, et constituent une avancée majeure vers une économie circulaire du PET.
