Celles et ceux qui ont assisté aux journées annuelles du PEPR Recyclage, la semaine dernière à Lyon, ont pu la parcourir en avant-première. Le résultat : une série d’articles, de chroniques, d’interviews et de portraits, pour mieux comprendre l’organisation et les objectifs du PEPR, les initiatives portées par ses équipes et découvrir les scientifiques et laboratoires qui le compose. Les politiques anti-sacs plastiques réduisent jusqu’à 47 % les déchets sur les littoraux américains
Une étude menée par les universités du Delaware et de Columbia a démontré l’efficacité des politiques locales d’interdiction ou de taxation des sacs plastiques à usage unique sur la réduction de la pollution des littoraux. En analysant des données issues de dizaines de milliers d’opérations de nettoyage menées entre 2007 et 2023 via l’application Clean Swell et la base TIDES de l’Ocean Conservancy, les chercheurs ont observé une baisse de 25 à 47 % de la proportion de sacs plastiques collectés dans les zones couvertes par ces politiques, par rapport aux zones sans réglementation.
L’effet s’amplifie avec le temps, sans retour à la hausse des déchets, et apparaît plus marqué pour les politiques à l’échelle étatique que communale. Fait notable, les frais appliqués aux sacs semblent être plus efficaces que les interdictions pures, en particulier dans les régions initialement très polluées.

Un matériau polymère « vivant » imprimable pour capter le CO₂ de l’air dans les bâtiments
Des chercheurs de l’ETH Zurich ont mis au point un matériau « vivant » à base d’un hydrogel polymère imprimable en 3D, dans lequel sont encapsulées des cyanobactéries photosynthétiques. Ce gel permet non seulement la croissance des bactéries mais surtout la séquestration du dioxyde de carbone atmosphérique par double mécanisme : la photosynthèse produit de la biomasse, et le métabolisme bactérien induit la précipitation minérale (carbonates solides) dans la matrice. Cette double capture (organique et minérale) confère au matériau des propriétés de piégeage du CO₂ supérieures à de nombreux procédés biologiques classiques.
Le polymère réticulé hydrophile a été sélectionné pour sa capacité à diffuser efficacement lumière, eau, nutriments et CO₂ tout en assurant un habitat stable aux bactéries. L’architecture des objets est optimisée par impression 3D pour maximiser la surface d’échange, la diffusion capillaire des nutriments et la longévité cellulaire (>400 jours). Le matériau atteint une capture de 26 mg CO₂/g, en majorité sous forme minérale, et se rigidifie mécaniquement au fil du temps grâce à l’accumulation de carbonates dans sa structure.
Deux installations architecturales vivantes à Venise et Milan, imprimées avec ce matériau, démontrent le potentiel de ces hydrogels polymères dans la construction bio-inspirée pour faire des bâtiments des puits de carbone fonctionnels.

Un hydrogel polymère transforme les déchets plastiques en hydrogène propre à la lumière du soleil
Des chercheurs coréens de l’Institute for Basic Science (IBS) ont développé une technologie de photocatalyse novatrice capable de produire de l’hydrogène à partir de déchets plastiques comme les bouteilles en PET, simplement en présence d’eau et de lumière solaire. L’innovation repose sur l’encapsulation du photocatalyseur dans un hydrogel polymère, matériau supramoléculaire qui maintient le système à l’interface air-eau tout en stabilisant l’activité catalytique en conditions réelles (pH alcalin, lumière intense). Ce polymère permet la flottaison du catalyseur, optimise la séparation des gaz et évite les réactions secondaires, assurant une efficacité soutenue pendant plus de deux mois. Le polymère assure également une dégradation sélective du PET en acide téréphtalique et éthylène glycol, tout en libérant de l’hydrogène gazeux propre. Testé à l’échelle d’un mètre carré en conditions extérieures, le dispositif a montré sa robustesse et sa reproductibilité. L’équipe prévoit une mise à l’échelle jusqu’à 100 m² pour des applications industrielles de conversion plastique-hydrogène à faible empreinte carbone, fondée sur les propriétés spécifiques des polymères réticulés.
