Un hydrogel bon marché pour capturer le phosphore des eaux usées et le recycler à l’infini
Des chercheurs de l’université NC State ont mis au point un hydrogel économique capable de piéger le phosphore présent dans les eaux contaminées tout en permettant sa récupération et sa réutilisation. Ce matériau innovant associe deux polymères peu coûteux et disponibles dans le commerce : le polyéthylèneimine (PEI), dont la structure moléculaire fixe sélectivement les ions phosphate, et le poly(méthyl vinyl éther-co-anhydride maléique) (PMVEMA), qui forme avec le PEI un gel stable et perméable à l’eau. Grâce à cette structure réticulée, l’hydrogel fonctionne à température ambiante, capte plus de 90 % du phosphore dissous et permet sa libération sous l’action d’une base douce. Cette stratégie, qui évite les acides ou solvants agressifs des procédés actuels, rend possible un recyclage quasi intégral du phosphore (jusqu’à 99 %) tout en conservant l’efficacité du matériau sur plusieurs cycles. Destiné à la dépollution des eaux de ruissellement agricoles et des rejets industriels, ce système présente aussi un potentiel économique remarquable : après 50 utilisations, le coût de récupération du phosphore tombe sous les 0,50 $ par livre. Le développement de ce polymère fonctionnel ouvre de nouvelles perspectives pour une gestion circulaire de cette ressource essentielle et critique.

Un catalyseur au fer pour des plastiques biosourcés ultra-résistants et recyclables
Un nouveau catalyseur à base de fer permet de produire en une seule étape des copolymères PSE-PLA issus de ressources renouvelables comme le lactide ou l’isosorbide. Ce système tandem en réacteur unique enchaîne deux polymérisations successives sous conditions douces, générant des matériaux thermorésistants (>500 °C) et chimiquement recyclables. Il ouvre une voie prometteuse pour des plastiques techniques durables et circulaires.

Ineos produit des polymères recyclés de qualité vierge à partir d’huile de pyrolyse en France
À Lavéra, Ineos Olefins & Polymers Europe démarre la production de polyoléfines recyclées de qualité vierge à partir d’huile de pyrolyse obtenue par recyclage avancé de déchets plastiques post-consommation non mécaniquement recyclables. Adaptée pour traiter ce nouveau naphta renouvelable, l’unité craque l’huile pour produire de l’éthylène et du propylène recyclés, transformés ensuite en polyéthylène et polypropylène certifiés ISCC Plus, répondant aux exigences européennes pour les emballages sensibles. Cette innovation marque une avancée concrète vers la circularité des polymères à haute performance.

Des polymères auto-organisés grâce à la polymérisation « frontale »
Des chercheurs ont modélisé la polymérisation frontale de type FROMP pour contrôler finement la structuration périodique de polymères lors de leur formation. Leur modèle relie l’équilibre thermodynamique de dissociation aux cinétiques de réaction pour prédire l’émergence de motifs, comme des zones alternées de rigidité. Cette approche bioinspirée permet de concevoir des matériaux polymères aux propriétés ajustables avant toute synthèse chimique.

Des baskets recyclées à partir de pales d’éoliennes en fin de vie
La marque espagnole El Ganso intègre dans ses semelles un mélange de caoutchouc et de poudre d’époxy/fibre de verre issu du recyclage de pales d’éoliennes démontées par Acciona Energía. Ce matériau composite, obtenu par friction mécanique, provient d’un parc renouvelé à Cadix. Ce projet illustre une voie prometteuse pour la valorisation de polymères thermodurcissables et fibres dans les secteurs du textile, de l’automobile et du bâtiment, via des procédés mécaniques à échelle industrielle.
