Des bioplastiques pas si inoffensifs ? Des particules d’amidon affectent la santé des souris
Une étude récente publiée dans le Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry révèle que les particules issues de plastiques biodégradables à base d’amidon, bien que perçues comme plus écologiques, peuvent entraîner des effets néfastes sur la santé. Menée par une équipe dirigée par Yongfeng Deng, cette recherche montre que des souris exposées durant trois mois à des microplastiques d’origine amidonnée ont présenté des dommages organiques, des perturbations métaboliques et un déséquilibre du microbiote intestinal.
Les tests ont comparé des souris nourries avec une alimentation standard à celles recevant de faibles ou fortes doses de ces particules. Les résultats sont préoccupants : atteintes hépatiques et ovariennes, anomalies des triglycérides, perturbations du métabolisme du glucose et des lipides, ainsi que des altérations des voies génétiques liées au rythme circadien. Ces effets, observés même à faible dose, questionnent l’innocuité de ces matériaux considérés comme durables.
Longtemps présentés comme une alternative sûre aux plastiques pétrosourcés, les bioplastiques à base d’amidon manquent de données sur leur impact biologique une fois fragmentés. Cette étude met en lumière un angle mort de leur évaluation, alors même que la présence de microplastiques est désormais avérée dans l’eau, l’alimentation, voire les systèmes médicaux. Les auteurs appellent à poursuivre les recherches pour comprendre les mécanismes de dégradation de ces matériaux dans l’organisme, et mieux encadrer leur utilisation dans les produits du quotidien.
Contrôler les interactions entre molécules pour créer des matériaux intelligents
Grâce à l’étude des réactions de molécules immobilisées sur des surfaces, des chercheurs grenoblois sont parvenus à maîtriser les liaisons moléculaires à l’interface solide/liquide, ouvrant la voie à la conception de matériaux réactifs et de biocapteurs innovants. Coordonné par Galina Dubacheva, le projet SupraSwitch, soutenu par l’ANR, mêle chimie supramoléculaire, physico-chimie de surface et nanochimie pour moduler les propriétés de nanomatériaux par des stimuli externes, notamment thermiques ou électrochimiques.
Les premières expériences exploitent des nanoparticules d’or recouvertes de polymères thermosensibles contenant des marqueurs fluorescents. L’interaction entre la lumière et les nanoparticules (plasmonique) permet de contrôler la fluorescence de façon réversible selon la température. La contraction ou l’expansion du polymère modifie la distance entre l’or et le marqueur, altérant ainsi l’intensité lumineuse. Cette modulation permettrait, à terme, de développer des capteurs thermiques à l’échelle nanométrique, comme des nanothermomètres intracellulaires ou des systèmes de libération ciblée de médicaments via des liposomes fonctionnels.

Face aux restrictions croissantes sur les composés per- et polyfluoroalkylés (PFAS), des chercheurs allemands des instituts Fraunhofer LBF et IFAM ont lancé le projet HATE-Fluor pour développer des élastomères et revêtements techniques sans fluor, capables de remplacer les fluoroélastomères dans des conditions extrêmes. Ces matériaux, utilisés dans de nombreuses applications allant de l’électronique de pointe à la technologie médicale ou chimique, sont aujourd’hui sous pression réglementaire en raison de leur persistance environnementale.
Le projet se concentre sur trois axes principaux : améliorer la stabilité thermique des élastomères fluorés par de nouveaux antioxydants, développer des formulations d’élastomères sur mesure, et concevoir un système de revêtement protecteur contre les attaques chimiques et l’oxydation. Les revêtements étudiés incluent des polyimides associés à des silicates lamellaires, capables de réduire jusqu’à 99 % la perméabilité aux gaz nocifs et à l’humidité. Ces systèmes devraient également limiter le vieillissement prématuré et la formation de dendrites.
La structure modulaire des solutions envisagées permet une adaptation fine aux exigences des applications actuelles des fluoroélastomères. Grâce à leur expérience dans la substitution des PFAS, les équipes Fraunhofer visent à livrer, d’ici trois ans, des matériaux alternatifs prêts à l’emploi répondant aux enjeux de durabilité et de performance industrielle.
[Design stories] Des toiles techniques au service de l’architecture : Serge Ferrari sur la route de la soie
Des réalisations emblématiques aux solutions sanitaires improvisées, le groupe Serge Ferrari illustre l’inventivité de la plasturgie française dans le design architectural. Dernier fait d’armes : la gare touristique du lac Chaka, en Chine centrale, le long de l’ancienne route de la soie. Conçue par l’architecte Song Yehao, cette structure spectaculaire est coiffée de membranes rouges en PTFE, d’une surface totale de plus de 6 000 m², évoquant les rubans portés par les visiteurs. Ces toiles assurent une diffusion douce de la lumière naturelle tout en garantissant une haute résistance mécanique.
L’ouvrage, érigé à quelques mètres du rivage d’un lac salé surnommé le « miroir du ciel », s’inscrit dans une série de réalisations du groupe français en Asie, comme l’habillage d’une résidence pour personnes âgées à Pékin. Pour cette gare, Song Yehao, familier des membranes composites, a préféré le textile technique aux panneaux aluminium initialement prévus. La structure est également agrémentée de 4 125 m² de toiles Soltis 86 colorées, flottant au vent et renforçant l’identité visuelle du site. La combinaison de performance, légèreté et esthétique portée par les toiles Serge Ferrari en fait un matériau de choix pour une architecture aussi fonctionnelle que poétique.

Une mousse biosourcée et compostable pour révolutionner l’emballage
Née en Californie, la start-up Cruz Foam développe une mousse biosourcée à base de chitosane, dérivé de la chitine présente dans les déchets de crustacés. Issue d’un procédé par extrusion compatible avec les équipements industriels existants, cette mousse présente des performances mécaniques comparables aux plastiques pétrosourcés tout en étant entièrement compostable, sans production de microplastiques. Le matériau peut être transformé en plaques de mousse pour emballages ou en solutions isothermes comme Cruz Cool, avec des applications dans l’électronique, l’électroménager, la logistique et le luxe.
Grâce à un procédé de compoundage confidentiel, la mousse obtenue offre une excellente homogénéité et stabilité, facilitant sa transformation en emballages sur mesure. Cruz Foam collabore déjà avec des industriels comme Sony, Whirlpool ou LVMH et prévoit une expansion en Europe, notamment en France avec le partenaire AMC Industrie. Le modèle de production circulaire repose sur la valorisation de déchets alimentaires, une compatibilité avec les lignes existantes, et un coût proche des mousses classiques. Ce matériau polymère biosourcé se positionne comme une alternative industrielle crédible pour une économie plus durable.
