L’Europe ajuste ses exigences sur les plastiques recyclés dans l’automobile
L’Union européenne revoit à la baisse ses objectifs de contenu recyclé dans les véhicules, reconnaissant les limites actuelles de la chaîne d’approvisionnement en matière de disponibilité et de traitement des plastiques automobiles. Le projet initial imposait un minimum de 25 % de plastiques recyclés dans les véhicules, dont un quart issu de véhicules hors d’usage (VHU). Désormais, le seuil global est abaissé à 20 %, avec 15 % provenant des VHU. Ce recul souligne les obstacles logistiques, économiques et techniques rencontrés par les constructeurs, malgré une volonté affirmée d’augmenter la circularité des matériaux. lire plus…
Une peau artificielle à base d’hydrogels pour mieux comprendre les maladies cutanées
Des chercheurs de l’EMPA développent une peau artificielle en 3D composée d’hydrogels polymères dérivés de gélatine de poissons d’eaux froides. Ce matériau non gonflant, compatible avec l’impression 3D, permet d’intégrer différentes couches cellulaires pour reproduire l’architecture complexe de la peau humaine. Grâce à cette technologie, il devient possible de créer des modèles vivants pour étudier les maladies de la peau ou tester de nouveaux traitements. Les propriétés modulables du polymère permettent aussi son usage comme pansement personnalisé, avec un faible risque immunologique. Ce travail met en avant l’apport des polymères bio-inspirés dans la médecine régénérative.

Des additifs apportent des surfaces ultra-douces et économiques aux non-tissés en PP
Polyvel a développé de nouveaux agents adoucissants destinés à la production de non-tissés en polypropylène (PP) offrant une douceur exceptionnelle au toucher. Dès 0,5 % d’incorporation, ces additifs permettent d’obtenir une surface allant d’un simple toucher lisse à un effet « supersoft » proche de la soie naturelle. Cette innovation s’adresse aux textiles hygiéniques mais aussi aux secteurs automobile, mobilier, médical et du bâtiment, tout en pouvant être adaptée aux besoins spécifiques des clients. lire plus…
Un plastique biodégradable à base de coquillages
Des chercheurs de l’Université de Californie du Sud ont développé un plastique alternatif biodégradable en combinant un polymère approuvé par la FDA, le poly(1,8-octanediol-co-citrate) (POC), avec du carbonate de calcium issu de coquilles marines. Ce nouveau matériau, nommé POC-CC, présente des propriétés mécaniques intéressantes et peut se dégrader en milieu marin sans affecter la faune ni la flore.
Inspirée par des travaux en biomatériaux orthopédiques, l’équipe dirigée par Eun Ji Chung a adapté le procédé pour créer un substitut de plastique robuste, moulé ici sous forme d’anneaux porte-canettes. En plus d’être biocompatible, le matériau est stable en milieu océanique, où il se dégrade progressivement sans perturber le pH de l’eau. Des tests ont confirmé qu’il n’était pas toxique pour les algues marines.
Le potentiel d’application est vaste : fabrication de pailles compostables, d’emballages souples ou d’objets à usage unique plus sûrs pour l’environnement. En intégrant un biomineral naturel à un polymère biodégradable, cette innovation démontre comment les matériaux polymères bio-inspirés peuvent contribuer à réduire la pollution plastique marine.

Microplastiques, une pollution invisible aux conséquences globales
Une compilation spéciale d’Environmental Science and Pollution Research (ESPR), réunissant 14 articles scientifiques, met en lumière l’ampleur de la pollution aux microplastiques dans le continuum terre-mer européen. Parmi les contributions marquantes, la Mission Tara Microplastiques (2019) révèle l’origine et les flux de cette pollution plastique dans neuf grands fleuves européens : Loire, Seine, Rhin, Elbe, Tamise, Ebre, Rhône, Tibre et Garonne. Ces études démontrent comment les microplastiques traversent les écosystèmes, soulignant l’urgence d’une approche coordonnée et transfrontalière face à ce problème environnemental majeur.
Pourquoi le plastique libère-t-il des fragments dangereux ?
Des chercheurs de la Columbia University School of Engineering ont mis en évidence les mécanismes moléculaires à l’origine de la formation massive de micro- et nanoplastiques. Ces minuscules fragments, plus petits qu’un virus, proviennent principalement des polymères semi-cristallins représentant 75 à 80 % des plastiques utilisés. Leur structure alternant couches dures cristallines et couches molles amorphes explique leur flexibilité et leur résistance, mais aussi leur fragilité environnementale. Sous l’effet de la dégradation, les couches molles cèdent, permettant ainsi aux fragments cristallins persistants de se détacher. Ces nanoplastiques omniprésents constituent une menace sérieuse pour les écosystèmes et la santé humaine en perturbant les fonctions cellulaires et génétiques.
