Optimisation de l’adhésion cellulaire sur polymères : le rôle clé du traitement UV/ozone dans la structuration des protéines d’ancrage
Des chercheurs de l’Institute of Science Tokyo ont élucidé les mécanismes moléculaires expliquant pourquoi un traitement UV/ozone (UVO) de courte durée maximise l’adhésion cellulaire sur les surfaces plastiques utilisées en culture biologique. Publiée dans Langmuir, leur étude combine spectroscopie photoélectronique X (XPS) et microscopie à force atomique (AFM) pour caractériser les modifications physicochimiques de substrats en polystyrène et polymère oléfini cyclique après exposition UVO. Contrairement à l’idée reçue selon laquelle une simple augmentation de l’hydrophilie suffit à améliorer l’adhésion, les chercheurs montrent que l’efficacité optimale résulte d’un équilibre subtil entre zones hydrophiles et hydrophobes favorisant la sélectivité d’adsorption des protéines d’adhésion telles que la fibronectine et la vitronectine. Ce processus, gouverné par le phénomène de Vroman, permet le remplacement progressif de protéines non adhésives comme l’albumine par celles essentielles à l’ancrage cellulaire. Un traitement trop long, en revanche, supprime les zones hydrophobes nécessaires à cette stabilisation, entraînant une adsorption non sélective et une perte d’adhérence. Ces résultats offrent une base rationnelle pour l’optimisation des surfaces de culture et des biomatériaux, permettant d’améliorer la performance d’implants et de dispositifs de culture cellulaire sans recourir à des agents de revêtement coûteux, un atout majeur pour la médecine régénérative et la recherche pharmaceutique.

Un film biosourcé rivalise avec les plastiques conventionnels pour la protection contre l’humidité et l’oxygène
Des chercheurs du Georgia Institute of Technology ont mis au point un film d’emballage biodégradable capable d’égaler, voire de surpasser, les plastiques pétrosourcés tels que le PET et l’EVOH en matière de barrière à l’humidité et à l’oxygène. Publiée dans ACS Applied Polymer Materials, cette avancée repose sur un assemblage de cellulose, de chitosane issu de déchets alimentaires ou de champignons, et d’acide citrique. Ces composants naturels, une fois réticulés et traités thermiquement, s’organisent à l’échelle moléculaire en une structure dense et ordonnée qui limite la diffusion des gaz et de la vapeur d’eau, même sous une humidité relative de 80 %. L’équipe de Carson Meredith et Natalie Stingelin a démontré que cette architecture confère au matériau une stabilité mécanique et une résistance à la dégradation hygroscopique inédites pour des biopolymères. En combinant polymère structural, plastifiant et additif hydrophobe, les chercheurs ont obtenu un film mince, flexible et durable, dont les propriétés barrières demeurent intactes dans des conditions tropicales simulées. Issu exclusivement de ressources renouvelables et biodégradables, ce matériau constitue une alternative prometteuse pour les emballages alimentaires, pharmaceutiques ou électroniques, conciliant performance fonctionnelle, circularité et innocuité environnementale.

Adhésion métal–polymère : des simulations atomiques révèlent les mécanismes d’accrochage à l’interface
Des chercheurs de l’Osaka Metropolitan University ont élucidé les interactions moléculaires qui gouvernent l’adhésion directe entre polymères et métaux, ouvrant la voie à de nouveaux matériaux hybrides légers pour les transports. Grâce à des simulations de dynamique moléculaire tout-atome, ils ont étudié la liaison entre des polyamides (PA6 et PAMXD6) et une surface d’alumine présentant ou non des groupements hydroxyles. Les modèles ont permis d’observer en temps réel l’organisation des chaînes polymères à l’interface : segments adsorbés (trains), boucles libres et extrémités (tails). Avant la déformation irréversible du système (régime élastique), la résistance à la traction dépend principalement de la chimie du polymère, l’aromatique PAMXD6 se montrant plus rigide que le PA6. Après le seuil de plasticité, c’est la chimie de surface du métal qui devient déterminante : sur une alumine hydroxylée, le PAMXD6 se désorbe tandis que le PA6 se réorganise sans rupture complète, transformant ses boucles en chaînes tendues. Sur une surface non hydroxylée, les deux polymères conservent une forte cohésion via des segments adsorbés stables. Ces observations atomistiques expliquent pourquoi certaines combinaisons métal–plastique résistent mieux que d’autres et fournissent un cadre rationnel pour optimiser les traitements de surface et la conception moléculaire des polymères d’adhésion, favorisant le développement de structures hybrides plus durables et énergétiquement efficientes.

Une voie inédite pour rendre les polyméthacrylates dégradables grâce à une copolymérisation radicalaire assistée par modélisation
Des chercheurs français et belges ont réussi à surmonter une limite jugée jusqu’ici « impossible » en chimie des polymères : introduire des liaisons dégradables dans les polyméthacrylates industriels comme le PMMA. Publiée dans Nature Communications, leur étude démontre qu’il est possible d’insérer des unités thionolactones – porteuses de liaisons thioesters clivables – au sein de chaînes polyméthacrylates grâce à un troisième comonomère « auxiliaire » (acrylate ou maléimide). Cette approche de copolymérisation radicalaire à ouverture de cycle (rROP) permet de créer des triades structurales contrôlées (par ex. PhMal–DOT–PhMal) assurant la dégradabilité sans altérer les propriétés mécaniques du polymère. Appuyée par des simulations Monte Carlo couplées (CMMC), la stratégie optimise les conditions de synthèse pour obtenir des polymères de haut poids moléculaire capables, après dégradation, de se fragmenter jusqu’à vingt-cinq fois en oligomères. Les chercheurs démontrent aussi la robustesse du procédé pour d’autres méthacrylates, dont des polymères hydrosolubles à potentiel biomédical, dégradables en milieu aqueux. Cette avancée associe conception computationnelle et chimie radicalaire pour introduire, de manière précise, des liaisons faibles dans des polymères auparavant non recyclables. Elle ouvre la voie à une nouvelle génération de matériaux méthacrylates à dégradation programmable, conciliant performance industrielle et fin de vie maîtrisée, et redéfinit les perspectives de durabilité pour l’une des familles plastiques les plus répandues au monde.

Recycler le PVC sans risque, c’est (enfin) possible
Le PVC est un plastique omniprésent… et l’un des plus difficiles à recycler. Trop chloré, il résiste aux procédés classiques et génère des sous-produits toxiques lorsqu’on tente de le brûler ou de le dégrader. Une équipe chinoise a mis au point une solution élégante et propre : un catalyseur sur-mesure (LaFe₀.₃Al₀.₇O₃) qui déclenche une « cascade » de réactions douces dans l’eau, à température ambiante.
Ce procédé active d’abord une forme spéciale d’oxygène singulet pour retirer les atomes de chlore de manière sélective. Ensuite, des radicaux hydroxyles attaquent la chaîne carbonée, menant à une dépolymérisation complète. Résultat : le PVC est transformé en CO₂ et en hydrocarbures liquides réutilisables, sans aucun résidu solide ni composé chloré toxique.
Une analyse du cycle de vie montre que cette approche réduit drastiquement les émissions et les impacts environnementaux par rapport à l’enfouissement ou à l’incinération. C’est un bel exemple de chimie durable, qui transforme un plastique problématique en ressource utile — et ouvre la voie à un recyclage plus propre et plus circulaire.
