Électrolyte polymère gélifié sans fluor pour batteries au lithium métal stables et durables
Des chercheurs ont mis au point un électrolyte polymère gélifié totalement dépourvu de fluor capable de stabiliser l’interface électrolytique solide (SEI) dans les batteries au lithium métal. Publiée dans Nature Communications, cette étude introduit un copolymère fluorine-free, nommé PVM-GPE, qui forme spontanément une SEI hybride riche en oxyde et nitrure de lithium (Li₂O/Li₃N). Cette couche inorganique assure une migration ionique rapide, une réduction des réactions parasites et une croissance homogène du lithium, empêchant ainsi la formation de dendrites. Le réseau polymère, obtenu par copolymérisation du carbonate de vinylène et du N,N’-méthylènebisacrylamide, combine liaisons hydrogène, ancrages anioniques et forte polarité, favorisant un transport sélectif et stable des ions Li⁺. Ce système, à la fois quasi-solide et hautement conducteur, permet d’atteindre une rétention de capacité de 84,7 % après 800 cycles à fort régime (3 C), surpassant les électrolytes fluorés conventionnels tout en éliminant leurs coûts et impacts environnementaux. L’analyse structurale révèle que la SEI favorise la croissance cristallographique du lithium le long du plan (200), plus stable et moins réactif, améliorant la durabilité des interfaces électrode-électrolyte. Compatible avec des cathodes riches en nickel (NCM811/NCM90), l’électrolyte maintient sa performance sous tension élevée (4,5 V) et dans des cellules poche de 1 Ah. En alliant conception moléculaire, chimie verte et ingénierie interfaciale, cette approche ouvre une voie durable vers des batteries solides-état performantes sans recours au fluor, conciliant sécurité, densité énergétique et circularité des matériaux.
Nature Recyclage éco-efficient du Téflon®
Une équipe de l’Université de Newcastle, en collaboration avec l’Université de Birmingham, a mis au point un procédé propre et économe en énergie permettant de décomposer le Téflon® (PTFE), polymère réputé pour son inertie chimique et thermique, en composés fluorés réutilisables. Publiée dans le Journal of the American Chemical Society, cette recherche démontre que l’application d’une énergie mécanique — par simple agitation dans un broyeur à billes — suffit, en présence de sodium métallique, à rompre les fortes liaisons carbone-fluor du polymère à température ambiante, sans solvants ni chauffage. Le Téflon® est ainsi converti en fluorure de sodium, matière première non toxique couramment utilisée en dentifrice et dans la synthèse de molécules pharmaceutiques. Grâce à une caractérisation fine par résonance magnétique nucléaire à l’état solide, les chercheurs confirment l’absence de sous-produits, validant l’efficacité et la pureté du recyclat. Ce procédé s’inscrit dans le cadre émergent de la mécan chimie verte, qui substitue l’énergie mécanique à la chaleur ou aux solvants pour initier des réactions propres. En offrant une voie circulaire pour récupérer le fluor à partir de déchets polymériques résistants, cette approche pourrait transformer la gestion des plastiques fluorés, traditionnellement sources de « polluants éternels », en une ressource chimique renouvelable. Elle marque une étape décisive vers une économie du fluor durable, conciliant innovation scientifique et responsabilité environnementale.

Recyclage des plastiques : la France à la traîne en Europe
Selon les dernières données publiées par Eurostat, la France se classe parmi les plus mauvais élèves de l’Union européenne en matière de recyclage des emballages plastiques, avec un taux de seulement 25,7 % en 2023. Alors que la moyenne européenne atteint 42,1 %, certains pays comme la Belgique ou la Lettonie dépassent les 59 %. Malgré une légère amélioration globale du recyclage en Europe et une stabilisation des déchets produits, l’Hexagone peine à suivre la dynamique, mettant en lumière un retard structurel dans la mise en œuvre d’une gestion efficace des déchets plastiques. Ce constat relance la question de l’optimisation des filières de tri et de recyclage, au cœur des enjeux scientifiques et technologiques d’une économie circulaire performante.

PFAS : la mobilisation scientifique pour transformer la dépollution en innovation durable
Face à la menace croissante des PFAS, ces « polluants éternels » omniprésents et quasi indestructibles, la recherche française s’organise autour du CNRS pour inventer des solutions de dépollution à la fois efficaces et soutenables. Ces composés fluorés, utilisés depuis les années 1950 pour leurs propriétés antiadhésives et hydrofuges, s’accumulent dans l’environnement et les organismes vivants, posant un défi scientifique, énergétique et économique majeur. L’initiative coordonnée par la Direction des relations avec les entreprises (DRE) et la Mission pour les initiatives transverses et interdisciplinaires (MITI) du CNRS illustre la puissance de la recherche partenariale entre laboratoires, start-up et industriels. Trois approches complémentaires émergent : la modélisation moléculaire prédictive de la deeptech MS4ALL, qui simule les mécanismes de dégradation pour identifier les voies réactionnelles les plus sûres ; la filtration membranaire réactive développée à l’Institut européen des membranes, combinant nanofiltration, électrochimie et sonolyse pour isoler et détruire les PFAS avant réinjection dans le sol ; et la dégradation électrochimique directe portée par la start-up TreeWater, capable de minéraliser totalement ces composés grâce à un procédé breveté d’électro-oxydation. Ces innovations, soutenues par des partenariats structurants avec SUEZ et Veolia, visent à accélérer le passage du laboratoire à l’échelle industrielle. En conjuguant intelligence artificielle, chimie verte et ingénierie de procédés, le CNRS et ses partenaires esquissent une nouvelle ère de dépollution : celle où la lutte contre les PFAS devient un moteur d’innovation scientifique et écologique.
Recyclage rapide du nylon issu des filets de pêche : une avancée chimique pour la valorisation durable des plastiques
Des chercheurs du Department of Materials Engineering de l’Indian Institute of Science (IISc) ont développé un procédé chimique novateur permettant de recycler efficacement le polyamide 66 (PA-66), un polymère couramment utilisé dans les filets de pêche et les pièces automobiles mais réputé difficile à retraiter. Publiée dans le Chemical Engineering Journal, l’étude décrit une réaction de transamidation accélérée dans laquelle un agent réticulant, la mélamine, est introduit dans le polymère fondu en présence d’un catalyseur. Cette réaction, compatible avec les extrudeuses industrielles, se déroule en moins de deux minutes et régénère des chaînes de nylon robustes tout en préservant leurs propriétés mécaniques après plusieurs cycles. L’approche repose sur une stratégie de « déconstruction-reconstruction » moléculaire : les liaisons rompues sont simultanément réparées, formant un matériau renforcé et réutilisable. Le nylon recyclé ainsi obtenu conserve une rigidité adaptée à des applications structurelles telles que bancs publics, séparateurs routiers ou pavés modulaires. L’équipe, dirigée par le Pr Suryasarathi Bose, démontre également la compatibilité du matériau avec l’impression 3D, ouvrant la voie à une production circulaire d’objets techniques et grand public. En alliant cinétique chimique rapide, recyclabilité et revalorisation d’un déchet marin critique, ce procédé illustre le potentiel de la chimie de polymérisation adaptative pour transformer les déchets plastiques en ressources performantes, tout en contribuant à la réduction de la pollution océanique.
Un champignon comestible pour imperméabiliser papiers et textiles sans plastique
Des chercheurs de l’Université du Maine, en collaboration avec l’American Chemical Society, ont mis au point un revêtement biodégradable et comestible à base de champignon capable de rendre divers matériaux imperméables, offrant une alternative naturelle aux films plastiques jetables. Publiée dans Langmuir, l’étude démontre que le mycélium du champignon Trametes versicolor, associé à des nanofibrilles de cellulose issues du bois, forme spontanément une couche dense bloquant l’eau, les huiles et les graisses. En cultivant ce mélange sur du papier, du denim, du feutre polyester ou du bois, les chercheurs ont obtenu, après quelques jours de croissance et de séchage, un film continu d’épaisseur comparable à une peinture, conférant une résistance hydrophobe visible par la formation de gouttelettes sphériques à la surface. Ce revêtement, inoffensif et stable, agit comme une barrière universelle contre les liquides tout en étant intégralement biosourcé et compostable. En combinant la chimie naturelle des polysaccharides fongiques et la nanostructuration de la cellulose, cette approche inaugure une nouvelle génération de matériaux d’emballage et de protection sans polymères synthétiques. Elle illustre la capacité des systèmes biologiques à générer des interfaces fonctionnelles et durables, susceptibles de remplacer les revêtements plastiques utilisés dans les emballages alimentaires et les textiles, réduisant ainsi la dépendance mondiale aux plastiques à usage unique.
