Quand les polymères fondus racontent le cosmos
Le chercheur John Spevacek établit un parallèle fascinant entre la physique des polymères fondus et celle de l’univers, où la matière plastique devient une métaphore de l’espace-temps. Comme un polymère viscoélastique capable à la fois de couler et de stocker de l’énergie, l’espace-temps se révèle lui aussi fluide et élastique : sa viscosité se manifeste dans l’expansion issue du Big Bang, tandis que son élasticité se dévoile à travers les ondes gravitationnelles nées des collisions de trous noirs. Membranes sPEEK dopées aux liquides ioniques prototropes ouvrant la voie à des électrolytes polymères hautement conducteurs
Cette recherche explore une approche innovante pour concevoir des membranes électrolytes polymères capables de fonctionner au-delà de 100 °C dans les piles à combustible. En incorporant des liquides ioniques prototropes de différentes acidités dans une matrice de poly(éther-éther-cétone) sulfoné (sPEEK) réticulée, les chercheurs obtiennent des matériaux conjuguant stabilité thermique, conductivité protonique élevée et structure mécanique robuste. Le sPEEK, polymère fluorine-free à forte affinité hydrophile, assure une ancrage efficace des liquides ioniques tout en apportant ses propres sites donneurs de protons. Selon l’acidité du liquide ionique utilisé, le transport des protons s’opère par des mécanismes coopératifs impliquant H₃O⁺, améliorant la conduction même en conditions de faible humidité. Les observations morphologiques révèlent toutefois une microstructure hétérogène suggérant des pertes partielles d’électrolyte, un point clé à optimiser pour une meilleure durabilité. En combinant chimie des polymères et électrochimie des liquides ioniques, cette approche ouvre la voie à des électrolytes hybrides stables, efficaces et respectueux de l’environnement pour les PEMFC de nouvelle génération.
Nature Membrane réticulée à motifs 12-couronne-4 pour une capture sélective et régénérable du lithium en milieu aqueux
Un monomère diallylammonium portant un motif 12-couronne-4 a été synthétisé puis polymérisé par cyclopolymérisation radicalaire et réticulé, avec insertion contrôlée de SO₂, afin d’obtenir des résines insolubles dotées de cavités chélatantes accordées au Li⁺. Cette architecture conjugue reconnaissance hôte–invité des éthers couronne, sites ammonium répartis dans le réseau et segments sulfone qui rigidifient et polarisent la matrice, générant une texture mésoporeuse à grande surface favorable aux transferts. Les tests en solutions binaires confirment une forte sélectivité vis-à-vis de Na⁺ et K⁺ et un avantage sur Mg²⁺ à concentrations équivalentes, tandis que FTIR et XPS indiquent l’implication des liaisons éther dans la complexation. Régénérable par désorption acide, cette plateforme polymère offre une voie crédible pour la récupération durable du lithium et l’épuration d’effluents.
Nature Du marc de café et du plastique pour capter le CO₂ : une innovation brevetée à l’Université de Sharjah
Des chercheurs de l’Université de Sharjah ont mis au point et breveté une technologie de capture du dioxyde de carbone (CO₂) fondée sur la valorisation simultanée de deux déchets abondants : le marc de café usagé et le polyéthylène téréphtalate (PET). Le procédé repose sur une co-pyrolyse à 600 °C en présence d’hydroxyde de potassium (KOH), qui active la formation d’un charbon poreux hautement performant capable d’adsorber le CO₂ émis par les procédés industriels. Cette approche, à la fois sobre en énergie et circulaire, convertit des flux polluants en ressource fonctionnelle : le marc de café — dont huit millions de tonnes sont jetées chaque année — et le PET des emballages plastiques deviennent ainsi les précurseurs d’un charbon activé à grande surface spécifique, optimisé pour la capture de gaz et la purification de l’air ou de l’eau. Selon la chercheuse Haif Aljomard, cette technologie « transforme une tasse de café et une bouteille d’eau en outil contre le changement climatique ». Outre la séquestration du CO₂, le matériau obtenu pourrait être déployé dans des filtres industriels, systèmes d’épuration, traitements d’effluents ou procédés énergétiques, offrant une solution polyvalente et économique pour réduire les émissions et limiter la mise en décharge des déchets. Cette innovation illustre parfaitement la logique de l’économie circulaire appliquée à la chimie des matériaux, conciliant gestion des déchets, transition énergétique et ingénierie du carbone.

DopeBot : une IA pour concevoir les polymères conducteurs de la bioélectronique du futur
Des chercheurs de l’Université d’État de Caroline du Nord et d’Iowa State University ont développé DopeBot, un système expérimental piloté par intelligence artificielle capable d’explorer systématiquement la manière dont la dopage moléculaire modifie les propriétés électroniques des polymères conjugués. L’objectif est d’optimiser des matériaux polymères destinés à la bioélectronique et aux dispositifs hybrides organiques, où les matériaux doivent combiner conductivité, stabilité et compatibilité biologique. Le robot expérimental a réalisé plus de 200 essais de dopage sur le polymère semi-conducteur pBTTT avec l’agent F4TCNQ, en faisant varier des paramètres tels que le solvant et la température. L’algorithme a ensuite corrélé les structures moléculaires obtenues aux performances électroniques mesurées, avant de raffiner les expériences suivantes. Les analyses combinées, incluant des calculs quantiques menés à NC State, ont révélé que la position des dopants au sein de la matrice polymère et l’ordre local des chaînes jouent un rôle clé dans la conductivité obtenue. Ces résultats, publiés dans Matter, permettent de relier de manière causale les conditions de traitement à la structure électronique des polymères, ouvrant la voie à une ingénierie prédictive des matériaux organiques. L’équipe travaille déjà à la conception de nouveaux polymères destinés à des applications biomédicales et neurosensorielles, démontrant comment l’intelligence artificielle peut accélérer la découverte de matériaux polymères fonctionnels adaptés aux technologies émergentes de l’électronique douce.

K 2025 : le rendez-vous mondial de l’innovation plastique s’ouvre à Düsseldorf
Le salon international K 2025, plus grand événement mondial consacré aux plastiques et aux caoutchoucs, a ouvert ses portes à Düsseldorf pour huit jours dédiés à l’innovation, à la durabilité et à la transformation de l’industrie. Sous le slogan « The Power of Plastics! Green – Smart – Responsible », l’édition 2025 met en avant trois axes majeurs : l’économie circulaire, la numérisation et la responsabilité sociale. Avec 3 257 exposants issus de 66 pays, l’événement réunit toute la chaîne de valeur — des fabricants de machines aux producteurs de matières premières, en passant par la recherche et les services. Le pavillon spécial Plastics Shape the Future (hall 6) illustre la mutation du secteur vers une production plus durable, tandis que la Startup Zone (hall 7) met en lumière vingt jeunes entreprises explorant l’IA, les bioplastiques et les procédés numériques pour une économie circulaire. Les États-Unis y affichent une forte présence avec 84 exposants répartis sur deux pavillons, soutenus par le Département du commerce américain. Le salon intègre également des initiatives concrètes de durabilité, comme un système de gobelets réutilisables et une Career Day pour les jeunes talents.
