EcoStyrene : une solution chimique pour recycler les polystyrènes contaminés
Sulzer lance EcoStyrene, une technologie de recyclage chimique capable de traiter les déchets de polystyrène (PS) contenant des retardateurs de flamme et des résidus alimentaires. Cette approche permet de contourner la nécessité d’un flux propre de matière première, un obstacle majeur des procédés conventionnels. Le procédé, basé sur un réacteur à lit fluidisé, génère des ressources réutilisables, y compris pour le contact alimentaire. Commercialisable immédiatement, EcoStyrene élargit la gamme des déchets acceptables tout en réduisant l’impact environnemental du PS.
L’industrie chimique européenne vacille sous la pression mondiale
Vynova fermera son usine de PVC aux Pays-Bas fin 2025, peu après l’annonce de Dow de fermer trois sites en Europe. Concurrence étrangère, coûts élevés et régulations strictes fragilisent le secteur. En réponse, la Commission européenne prévoit une Critical Chemical Alliance pour préserver la souveraineté industrielle. Seul contre-exemple : Ineos finalise un vapocraqueur géant à Anvers, symbole d’un espoir isolé.

Un algorithme lève le voile sur la structure des copolymères bloc
Des chercheurs de l’Université d’Amsterdam ont développé un algorithme combinant spectrométrie de masse en tandem et modélisation de la fragmentation moléculaire, permettant pour la première fois de déterminer la distribution des longueurs de blocs dans les copolymères. Appliqué aux polyamides et polyuréthanes, cet outil révèle que des matériaux chimiquement identiques peuvent avoir des architectures internes très différentes selon leur procédé de synthèse, ce qui influence fortement leurs propriétés mécaniques. Cette avancée ouvre la voie à une conception plus fine et durable des matériaux polymères.

Transformer le P3HB microbien en plastiques biodégradables sur mesure
Une équipe de l’Université du Colorado a mis au point un procédé catalytique qui transforme le poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (P3HB), un polyester biodégradable produit naturellement par des microorganismes, en une gamme de polymères personnalisables et recyclables. En modifiant la chiralité du polymère d’origine, les chercheurs ont généré de nouveaux stéréoisomères de PHA aux propriétés ajustables, comme la flexibilité ou la rigidité. Ces matériaux sont prometteurs pour des usages variés, du médical à l’emballage, tout en étant entièrement biodégradables et recyclables.

Les polymères réticulaires révolutionnent la chimie des matériaux poreux
Les polymères réticulaires, comme les MOF, COF et POP, offrent des réseaux cristallins hautement poreux et modulables idéaux pour piéger sélectivement des gaz ou de l’eau. En captage du CO₂, les MOF intègrent des centres métalliques et des ligands organiques permettant une adsorption fine via des interactions chimiques ou physiques. Pour la récolte d’eau atmosphérique, les COF hydrophiles favorisent la condensation capillaire à faible humidité. Grâce à des techniques de synthèse avancées, ces matériaux atteignent des performances supérieures aux adsorbants classiques. Leur stabilité chimique et thermique, leur sélectivité moléculaire et leur régénération basse énergie en font des candidats de choix pour des applications industrielles, notamment dans la décarbonation, la filtration ou la fourniture d’eau en milieux extrêmes.

Des enzymes piégées dans des nanosphères pour recycler le PET plus efficacement
Des chercheurs ont développé une méthode innovante pour recycler le plastique PET en piégeant des enzymes dégradantes directement dans des nanosphères protéiques autoassemblées produites par des bactéries. Grâce à une étiquette peptidique, les enzymes sont immobilisées en une seule étape dès leur expression dans E. coli, éliminant les étapes de purification. Ce système permet une dépolymérisation de plus de 90 % en moins de 72 h sur des plastiques usagés, avec une réutilisation possible des enzymes sans perte majeure d’activité.
