Quand le polyamide donna naissance à une révolution textile
Inventé en 1935 et lancé en 1940, le nylon 6,6 fut le premier polymère synthétique entièrement conçu pour imiter et surpasser les fibres naturelles. Grâce à la polycondensation d’un diamine et d’un diacide, DuPont mit au point une fibre thermoplastique capable d’être fondue, filée puis étirée pour former des chaînes cristallisées à haute ténacité. Les propriétés mécaniques du polyamide — élasticité, résistance à l’abrasion, stabilité dimensionnelle — en firent une alternative bon marché à la soie pour les bas féminins. Ce fut aussi une percée industrielle : filage par fusion, bobinage motorisé à grande vitesse, et formulation d’enduits de surface adaptés au tissage mécanique. Durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la production fut réorientée vers des usages stratégiques (parachutes, cordages, gilets). Dès 1945, la demande explosa et déclencha les célèbres « émeutes du nylon ». Le polyamide devint ainsi l’un des premiers polymères à créer un marché de masse, marquant l’avènement des textiles techniques et des fibres synthétiques dans la vie quotidienne.

Un polymère ferroélectrique sans fluor, flexible et compatible capteurs souples
Des chercheurs ont mis au point un polymère ferroélectrique dépourvu de fluor, ouvrant la voie à des dispositifs électroniques souples sans « polluants éternels ». Contrairement aux polymères fluorés comme le PVDF, ce nouveau matériau génère une polarisation électrique sans nécessiter de cristallisation. Sa structure élastique et sa réponse électrique réversible en font un candidat prometteur pour l’intégration dans des capteurs souples, des dispositifs portables et des systèmes AR/VR, tout en restant biodégradable.

Des coréens convertissent le CO₂ en alcool allylique avec un rendement record
Des chercheurs coréens ont développé une méthode électrochimique innovante permettant de convertir le CO₂ en alcool allylique, un monomère liquide à haute valeur ajoutée utilisé notamment dans les plastiques et les adhésifs. Grâce à un catalyseur au cuivre enrichi en phosphore (CuP₂) intégré à une cellule membrane-électrode, ils atteignent une efficacité de Faraday de 66,9 %, bien au-delà des standards actuels. Ce système favorise la formation de liaisons C–C à partir d’intermédiaires instables comme le formate, ouvrant la voie à la valorisation directe du CO₂ en composés C3+ liquides.

De la bière sumérienne au milkshake moderne : la saga polymère de la paille
Née il y a des millénaires, la paille connaît son essor au XIXe siècle avec l’invention du modèle en papier par Marvin Stone. Mais c’est dans les années 1930 que la flexibilité s’invite, grâce au génie de Joseph Friedman et à l’ingénierie du papier strié. Cette avancée sera d’abord adoptée dans les hôpitaux avant de conquérir les fast-foods. Dans les années 1960, le plastique supplantera rapidement le papier : le polypropylène et le polystyrène permettent alors des pailles bon marché, rigides ou flexibles, incassables, moulées en masse avec précision. Cette migration vers les polymères thermoplastiques incarne la transition vers une culture jetable mais accessible, où l’extrusion et le moulage par injection façonnent des milliards de pailles chaque jour. À l’heure des remises en question environnementales, la paille plastique devient aussi symbole du défi de la circularité des polymères.

Le téléphone Bakélite : premier chef-d’œuvre plastique et tournant industriel
Dans les années 1930, le téléphone en bakélite marque un jalon dans l’histoire des polymères. Ce plastique thermodurcissable, entièrement synthétique et mis au point en 1907, permet enfin une fabrication rapide, reproductible et sûre de pièces complexes. Résistant à la chaleur et isolant, il remplace avantageusement le métal dans les boîtiers de téléphones, abaissant le temps de production de plusieurs jours à quelques minutes. Sa mise en forme par moulage ouvre la voie au design moderne et à la production de masse, inaugurant l’ère des plastiques utilitaires et esthétiques.
Recyclage chimique de pneus usagés en cycloalcènes pour caoutchouc et nylon
Des chercheurs de KAIST ont mis au point une méthode catalytique double permettant de recycler les pneus usagés en cycloalcènes à haute pureté, comme le cyclopentène et le cyclohexène, à des rendements et sélectivités élevés. Cette approche surmonte les difficultés liées à la vulcanisation des caoutchoucs en déstructurant les réticulations par catalyse douce, contrairement à la pyrolyse classique. Les produits obtenus sont des précurseurs industriels pour les fibres de nylon et les élastomères, ouvrant la voie à un recyclage chimique efficace et circulaire des polymères complexes.
