Mitsui Chemicals améliore la qualité des plastiques recyclés grâce à une homogénéisation de la viscosité
Mitsui Chemicals, en collaboration avec Hagihara Industries, a développé une technologie permettant d’homogénéiser la viscosité des plastiques recyclés, un paramètre crucial pour améliorer leur qualité et leur taux de valorisation. La viscosité hétérogène issue des déchets plastiques limite aujourd’hui l’usage des matériaux recyclés à des applications de faible qualité.
Grâce à une technologie de mesure en ligne de la viscosité, intégrée dans les extrudeuses de granulation, les deux partenaires sont parvenus à maîtriser en temps réel la viscosité des plastiques recyclés. Cette technologie permet désormais d’atteindre une viscosité constante avec une seule extrudeuse, contre deux auparavant (extrusion tandem).

Vers des polymères sur-mesure grâce aux laboratoires autonomes pilotés par l’IA
Des chercheurs de l’Université de Sheffield ont développé une plateforme automatisée pour la synthèse intelligente de polymères, basée sur des réactions en flux et pilotée par intelligence artificielle. Ce « laboratoire auto-piloté » permet d’optimiser en temps réel les paramètres de polymérisation (conversion, taille des particules, homogénéité, pureté) grâce à des capteurs couplés à des algorithmes d’apprentissage. L’approche a permis la synthèse optimisée de poly(acrylate de pentafluorophényle), un polymère fonctionnel aisément modifiable, ouvrant la voie à des matériaux performants pour des applications médicales, adhésives ou durables. Cette technologie, capable d’exécuter des jours d’expériences sans supervision, pourrait transformer la recherche en matériaux polymères, en accélérant le développement de solutions adaptées aux défis de la santé et de la durabilité.

Des polymères semiconducteurs mieux tolérés par l’organisme pour les implants bioélectroniques
Des chercheurs de l’Université de Chicago ont mis au point de nouveaux polymères semiconducteurs qui réduisent fortement la formation de tissu cicatriciel autour des dispositifs implantés, tels que les pacemakers ou capteurs médicaux. En modifiant à la fois la structure chimique de la chaîne principale (ajout de sélénophène) et des chaînes latérales (matériaux immunomodulateurs), ils ont obtenu des matériaux biocompatibles tout en conservant leurs propriétés électroniques. Testés chez la souris, ces matériaux réduisent de 68 % la densité de collagène autour des implants, freinant la réaction immunitaire. Cette stratégie chimique complète les travaux antérieurs de l’équipe sur des hydrogels semiconducteurs et ouvre la voie à des dispositifs médicaux plus stables et durables dans le corps.

La lignine, un sous-produit forestier prometteur pour des matériaux durables
Des chercheurs de l’Université de Borås (Suède) ont démontré que le lignine, un résidu de l’industrie forestière, peut être transformé en matériau composite durable capable de remplacer les plastiques pétrosourcés. Dans sa thèse, Matilda Johansson a exploré des modifications chimiques de la lignine (par anhydride acétique et micro-ondes) pour le rendre compatible avec d’autres polymères comme le PLA, puis l’associer à des fibres de cellulose régénérées via extrusion, moulage ou impression 3D. Le matériau obtenu présente de bonnes propriétés mécaniques et thermiques, tout en étant biosourcé, recyclable et issu de déchets peu valorisés. Ce travail ouvre la voie à des biocomposites allégés et écoresponsables pour l’industrie.

Un polymère auto-cicatrisant pour une protection extrême contre les impacts
Des chercheurs de Texas A&M ont développé un polymère auto-réparant inédit, capable d’absorber des impacts extrêmes à l’échelle nanométrique. Lorsqu’il est percuté par un projectile, ce matériau fond localement sous l’effet de la chaleur générée, s’étire, puis reforme rapidement ses liaisons covalentes une fois refroidi, laissant un trou beaucoup plus petit que le projectile. Ce comportement, observé à haute température et à très haute vitesse de déformation (via la méthode LIPIT), ouvre la voie à des applications dans les véhicules spatiaux, les satellites ou les gilets pare-balles. Le polymère, baptisé DAP (Diels-Adler Polymer), présente des propriétés adaptatives uniques : solide à basse température, élastique à température intermédiaire, et fluide à haute température, tout en étant réversible. Bien que ce comportement reste pour l’instant limité aux nanocouches, les chercheurs travaillent à adapter sa chimie pour des applications à plus grande échelle.
Un nouveau projet européen pour développer des copolymères PLA biosourcés et recyclables destinés aux emballages alimentaires
Le projet GRECO, financé par Horizon Europe, vise à concevoir des emballages alimentaires innovants à base de copolymères de PLA biosourcés, biodégradables, recyclables et sûrs, selon une approche de conception durable. Coordonné par l’Université Aristote de Thessalonique, GRECO regroupe 22 partenaires européens dont TotalEnergies Corbion et AIMPLAS. Les matériaux développés cibleront des applications rigides et souples pour des produits comme le fromage, les viandes ou les fruits rouges, avec pour objectif d’améliorer la durée de conservation et la barrière à l’humidité et aux arômes. Des tests de recyclabilité (mécanique, chimique) et de biodégradabilité (sol, eau, compostage domestique et industriel) seront menés, tout comme une analyse des perceptions consommateurs. L’approche repose notamment sur l’extrusion réactive, la chimie verte et la mécanochimie pour produire des matériaux plus circulaires.
