Les polymères biodégradables peuvent-ils créer des microplastiques ?
Les plastiques biodégradables sont souvent présentés comme une solution pour réduire la pollution plastique, mais ils peuvent également générer des microplastiques. Bien que ces plastiques ne persistent pas indéfiniment, leur dégradation dépend fortement de leur environnement de fin de vie.
Des plastiques comme le PLA, PBAT et PBS, utilisés à grande échelle, sont conçus pour se dégrader plus facilement que les plastiques traditionnels. Toutefois, ils peuvent libérer des microplastiques pendant leur dégradation, et leur impact dépend de leur destination finale. Par exemple, le PLA se dégrade plus rapidement en conditions de compostage industriel, mais il peut libérer des microplastiques dans l’environnement si l’environnement n’est pas propice à sa dégradation complète.
Les chercheurs soulignent qu’il est important de ne pas considérer les plastiques biodégradables comme une solution universelle, car ils doivent être correctement traités pour éviter la pollution. Une bonne gestion des déchets est essentielle pour maximiser les avantages écologiques de ces matériaux.
Identification d’une voie pour concevoir des membranes polymères stables et durables
Des chercheurs des laboratoires Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories et de l’Université Clemson ont utilisé la diffusion de neutrons pour étudier l’impact des clusters ioniques dans les membranes électrolytiques polymères. En manipulant ces clusters avec des solvants comme l’éthanol, ils ont pu contrôler la conductivité et les propriétés mécaniques des membranes. Ces avancées pourraient améliorer l’efficacité et la longévité des dispositifs énergétiques propres, notamment les piles à hydrogène.

Transformer les restes alimentaires en plastiques biodégradables à usage unique
Des chercheurs de l’Université de Waterloo ont développé une méthode pour créer des plastiques biodégradables à partir de déchets alimentaires, en utilisant des bactéries qui consomment ces restes. Le processus produit des plastiques souples et flexibles, adaptés à des applications telles que l’emballage alimentaire, la livraison de médicaments et la réparation de tissus. Ces plastiques, issus des PHAs (polyhydroxyalcanoates), se dégradent naturellement sans laisser de pollution. Le défi actuel est de rendre le processus de production plus rentable pour une commercialisation à grande échelle.

Récolte d’eau de l’air : Une solution de copolymères améliore la désorption à température ambiante
Des chercheurs de l’Université Métropolitaine d’Osaka ont développé une solution de copolymères qui permet une récolte d’eau plus efficace de l’air, en facilitant la désorption des polymères à température ambiante, à environ 35°C, au lieu des 100°C habituellement nécessaires. En utilisant un copolymère de polyéthylène glycol et de polypropylène glycol, ils exploitent la différence d’hydrophilie entre les deux composants pour libérer l’eau adsorbée plus facilement. Cette technologie pourrait révolutionner l’approvisionnement en eau dans les régions arides, ainsi qu’en situations d’urgence, tout en contribuant à une gestion plus efficace des ressources en eau et à la réduction des gaz à effet de serre.

Protéines auto-assemblées pour des produits de soin durables et performants
Des chercheurs de la NYU Tandon School of Engineering ont développé un gel à base de protéines, appelé Q5, pour améliorer les propriétés rhéologiques des produits de soins personnels (PSCPs). Ce matériau, stable dans les conditions acides de la peau humaine, pourrait offrir une alternative plus durable et éthique aux polymères et polysaccharides traditionnels utilisés dans les cosmétiques. En plus de sa stabilité, Q5 présente une grande capacité à retenir l’humidité, ce qui en fait un excellent agent hydratant et un liant dans les produits de soin. Cette innovation pourrait transformer l’industrie des soins personnels en rendant les formulations plus performantes et respectueuses de l’environnement, tout en répondant aux exigences de durabilité et d’éthique.
