Un nouveau polymère thermochromique pour un refroidissement intérieur plus efficace
Des chercheurs de l’Université Rice ont développé un mélange de polymères thermochromiques intelligent qui ajuste sa transparence en fonction des variations de température, améliorant ainsi l’efficacité énergétique du refroidissement des espaces intérieurs. Ce matériau innovant, qui devient moins transparent à mesure que la température augmente, pourrait jouer un rôle crucial dans la réduction de la consommation énergétique mondiale liée à la climatisation, qui représente actuellement 7% de l’utilisation mondiale d’énergie et 3% des émissions de carbone.
Publiée dans la revue Joule, l’étude montre que ce nouveau système de mélange de polymères salés surpasse les matériaux similaires existants en termes de durabilité, de transparence et de réactivité. Les chercheurs ont combiné deux polymères avec un type de sel, optimisant la composition pour obtenir des transitions fluides entre les états transparent et opaque en réponse aux fluctuations de température. Ce matériau est non seulement hautement efficace pour réguler le rayonnement solaire, mais il est également remarquablement durable, avec une durée de vie estimée à 60 ans.
Innovation en filtration : élimination efficace des PFAS
Des chercheurs de l’Université du Queensland ont développé un filtre novateur pour extraire les substances per- et polyfluoroalkyles (PFAS) de l’eau, utilisant une solution sorbante brevetée basée sur une technique d’échange d’ions. Ce système permet non seulement de purifier l’eau de ces contaminants persistants mais aussi de récupérer les PFAS pour leur réutilisation dans la fabrication de batteries rechargeables à haute performance.
Les tests initiaux en laboratoire ayant été concluants, des essais pilotes sont prévus à Brisbane et aux États-Unis, avec l’objectif de commercialiser la technologie d’ici trois ans. Huntsman révolutionne les semelles avec sa gamme de polyuréthanes inspirée du gecko
La société Huntsman innove dans le domaine des matériaux avec le lancement de sa nouvelle gamme de polyuréthanes thermoplastiques Avalon Gecko TPU, inspirée par le biomimétisme et spécifiquement conçue pour les semelles de chaussures. Ces nouveaux matériaux s’inspirent de l’adhérence exceptionnelle du gecko, un petit lézard réputé pour sa capacité à adhérer aux surfaces les plus lisses.
Ces polyuréthanes offrent une excellente intégration avec d’autres matériaux de semelle intermédiaire en TPU, permettant une liaison sans l’usage d’adhésifs. De plus, ils sont recyclables mécaniquement, préservant ainsi leurs performances malgré le recyclage. La facilité de coloration et la possibilité de créer diverses textures et finitions de surface rendent cette gamme encore plus attrayante pour les fabricants de chaussures cherchant à allier performance et esthétique durable.
L’Usine Nouvelle Une première dans l’automobile : un composé avec 65 % de polypropylène recyclé utilisé dans la Peugeot 3008
Borealis, en collaboration avec Plastivaloire et Stellantis, a introduit un nouveau composé de polypropylène renforcé de fibres de verre, le Borcycle GD3600SY, contenant 65 % de contenu polymère recyclé post-consommation (PCR). Cette avancée représente une innovation majeure dans les applications intérieures automobiles, le matériau étant utilisé pour la première fois dans les consoles centrales de la nouvelle Peugeot 3008. Ce développement répond aux exigences anticipées de la nouvelle réglementation européenne sur les véhicules en fin de vie, qui stipule que 25 % des plastiques utilisés dans les nouveaux véhicules doivent provenir de sources recyclées.
Développement d’un polymère à base de biomasse pour la capture de CO₂
Des chercheurs de la FAMU-FSU College of Engineering ont mis au point un matériau innovant à base de lignine capable de capturer et de libérer le dioxyde de carbone (CO₂) de manière réversible et efficace, sans nécessiter de hautes pressions ni de températures extrêmes. Publiée dans Advanced Materials, cette étude révèle que le polymère, enrichi en lignine, maintient sa structure même après plusieurs cycles d’utilisation, ce qui le rend particulièrement prometteur pour la mitigation durable des émissions de carbone.
Le matériau peut absorber significativement le CO₂, tant des sources concentrées que de l’air ambiant, et le libérer à une température modérée de 60 degrés Celsius. Ce processus de libération est régulé par l’application contrôlée de chaleur, permettant ainsi une récupération et une réutilisation potentielles du CO₂ dans divers processus industriels. Cette approche innovante promet de transformer la gestion du CO₂ en industries en fournissant une alternative écologique et économiquement viable aux méthodes conventionnelles.
Avancées dans les matériaux pour l’aviation, développement de plastiques plus résistants
Des chercheurs de l’Université Fédérale de Kazan et de l’Université Nationale de Recherche Technique de Kazan ont réalisé des progrès significatifs dans le développement de plastiques capables de résister à des températures dépassant les 500 degrés Celsius. Publié dans Composites Part A: Applied Science and Manufacturing, leur travail introduit une nouvelle classe de composites utilisant des liants inorganiques à base de phosphate, au lieu des liants polymères organiques traditionnels qui supportent habituellement des températures jusqu’à 300-450 degrés Celsius et sont inflammables.
Cette innovation repose sur l’utilisation de liants aluminophosphates, aluminoborophosphates et aluminochrome phosphates renforcés avec du tissu de carbone. Ces matériaux non seulement répondent aux exigences de non-combustibilité mais offrent également une résistance accrue au choc thermique et une grande résistance mécanique, ce qui les rend idéaux pour des applications exigeantes telles que l’aviation et l’astronautique. En outre, ces composites sont écologiques et se décomposent en composants utilisés dans les engrais phosphatés et l’argile. La prochaine étape du projet sera de développer des propriétés hydrophobes pour ces plastiques au carbone afin d’améliorer leur résistance à l’humidité.
