Transformer le CO₂ en plastique grâce à l’électricité verte
Des chercheurs du Caltech ont mis au point un procédé en deux étapes capable de convertir du dioxyde de carbone, de l’eau et de l’électricité en polymères industriels. La première étape électrochimique transforme le CO₂ en monomères comme l’éthylène et le CO, puis une catalyse homogène les copolymérise. L’innovation réside dans l’intégration des deux boucles réactionnelles, malgré la présence d’impuretés issues de la réduction du CO₂, et ouvre la voie à des polymères durables produits sans hydrocarbures.

Vers un recyclage enzymatique industriel du PET à coût compétitif
Une nouvelle étude multidisciplinaire montre que le recyclage enzymatique du PET pourrait devenir économiquement viable à l’échelle industrielle. En optimisant la déconstruction enzymatique et la récupération des monomères, les chercheurs réduisent de 74 % les coûts de fonctionnement annuels et de 65 % la consommation énergétique. Le PET recyclé enzymatiquement est désormais moins cher que le PET vierge aux États-Unis, ouvrant une voie réaliste pour valoriser les plastiques post-consommation difficiles à traiter.

La structure du MAO enfin élucidée après 40 ans de mystère en catalyse des polyoléfines
Une équipe franco-américaine révèle la structure fine du méthylaluminoxane (MAO), co-catalyseur central dans la polymérisation des polyoléfines. Grâce à la RMN 27Al à très haut champ (1,2 GHz) couplée à la modélisation DFT, cinq types de centres d’aluminium ont été identifiés dans le MAO solide, dont deux très réactifs, impliqués dans l’activation des catalyseurs à base de zirconium. L’étude met en évidence la formation de cations [AlMe₂]+ et des échanges de groupes méthyle, validant des hypothèses longtemps spéculées. Cette percée ouvre la voie à la conception de co-catalyseurs optimisés pour une production de polyéthylène et polypropylène plus économe en énergie.

Des flacons moléculaires nanoscopiques pour maîtriser la polymérisation
Des chercheurs de l’Université de Tokyo ont conçu des « flacons moléculaires » à base de polymères bottlebrush pour contrôler des réactions de polymérisation dans des espaces ultra-restreints, inspirés du fonctionnement cellulaire. Ces polymères possèdent des zones internes de quelques nanomètres, qui agissent comme des réacteurs sélectifs. Cette approche permet de synthétiser des polymères complexes, comme des systèmes conjugés à base de thiophène pour l’optoélectronique, avec une grande précision et ouvre de nouvelles perspectives pour la chimie des matériaux avancés.

Recycler le plastique, un pari complexe
Une étude révèle que des granulés de polyéthylène recyclé peuvent relarguer plus de 80 substances chimiques, dont certaines perturbent les systèmes hormonaux et métaboliques chez les larves de poisson-zèbre. Cette complexité chimique provient à la fois des additifs plastiques non déclarés et de contaminants issus des usages antérieurs. Les chercheurs mettent en cause la variabilité imprévisible de la composition des polymères recyclés, rendant leur utilisation risquée sans contrôle strict. Ces résultats soulignent la nécessité de repenser la circularité des polyoléfines en y intégrant une traçabilité chimique rigoureuse.

Coldplay réédite ses albums vinyles en plastique recyclé
Coldplay réédite l’ensemble de sa discographie en vinyles EcoRecords, fabriqués à partir de polyéthylène téréphtalate recyclé (rPET). Chaque disque de 140 g contient en moyenne neuf bouteilles plastiques recyclées. Contrairement au pressage classique, ces vinyles sont réalisés par injection, une technique récemment perfectionnée, qui permet de réduire de 85 % les émissions de carbone lors de la fabrication. La qualité audio est maintenue grâce à des matériaux sélectionnés avec soin, selon les critères du groupe. Cette démarche illustre le potentiel des polymères recyclés pour des objets culturels tout en s’inscrivant dans une logique d’économie circulaire.
