In this hybrid system, nano-ions will act as anionic extractants to selectively bind critical or rare-earth metal cations from waste streams, while microgels will serve both as recyclable sorption platforms and as foaming agents transporting nano-ion/metal complexes for separation by foam skimming.
The PhD project will first focus on the synthesis of temperature- and pH-responsive model microgels with controlled structures. Their interactions with nano-ions, their behaviour in suspension and at liquid interfaces, and their use in emulsions and foams will be studied. A second objective will be the development of bio-based microgels to replace the model systems.
The successful candidate will work at ISM and CRPP, University of Bordeaux, with short stays at ICSM-CEA Marcoule for small-angle X-ray scattering or flotation studies. Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in Chemistry or Physics, preferably with experience in polymers, colloid science or soft matter, and should have spoken and written competence in English and/or French at C1 level or higher.
