Renforcement des vitrimers par des interactions secondaires réversibles
Des chercheurs de l’Académie des sciences chinoise ont développé un réseau de vitrimer à double liaison croisée basé sur le méthathèse de dioxaborolane. Ce design novateur combine des réticulations chimiques réversibles et des liaisons hydrogène temporaires, équilibrant rigidité et ductilité.
L’ajout de liaisons hydrogène, plus faibles que les interactions ioniques, permet une dissipation d’énergie efficace lors des déformations, améliorant la résilience du matériau. Ce système ouvre la voie à des vitrimers plus robustes et adaptatifs pour des applications exigeantes.

L’abrasion des pneus, source majeure de microplastiques en Allemagne
Selon l’Agence fédérale allemande de l’environnement, l’abrasion des pneus génère annuellement environ 100 000 tonnes de particules en Allemagne, représentant près d’un tiers des émissions totales de microplastiques. Ces particules, issues du contact des pneus avec les routes, se retrouvent dans l’air, l’eau et le sol, posant un problème environnemental majeur.
Le projet RAMUS, dirigé par des chercheurs du Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) et de l’Institut Fraunhofer, étudie ces émissions, en se concentrant particulièrement sur les véhicules électriques. En raison de leurs batteries lourdes et de leur couple élevé, ces véhicules produisent plus d’abrasion que les véhicules thermiques, aggravant ainsi leur impact.
En vue des nouvelles normes Euro 7 imposant des limites sur l’abrasion des pneus à partir de 2028, les chercheurs développent un modèle prédictif basé sur des tests de pneus et des simulations intégrant des données réelles de trafic. Ces travaux visent à mieux comprendre les facteurs influençant l’abrasion, comme le poids des véhicules, le type de pneus ou les conditions routières, pour proposer des solutions durables. Le projet, financé par le ministère allemand des Transports, se terminera en 2026 avec la mise à disposition publique des résultats.

L’édition des polymères : une voie prometteuse pour transformer les déchets plastiques en matériaux performants
Les chercheurs du laboratoire national Oak Ridge (ORNL) ont développé une méthode révolutionnaire d’édition des polymères permettant de transformer les plastiques usagés en nouveaux matériaux macromoléculaires avec des propriétés améliorées. Ce processus, inspiré par des approches de chimie moléculaire, ouvre la voie à une valorisation accrue des 450 millions de tonnes de plastique jetées chaque année, dont seulement 9 % sont recyclées.
Contrairement au recyclage classique, souvent énergivore et dégradant la qualité des plastiques, cette méthode repose sur deux types de métathèses : l’ouverture de cycles carbonés pour allonger les chaînes polymériques et l’intégration croisée de sous-unités entre polymères. Ces mécanismes permettent de réutiliser les blocs moléculaires existants pour produire des matériaux possédant des caractéristiques optimales comme une meilleure souplesse, rigidité ou résistance thermique.
Le processus s’est avéré particulièrement efficace sur des polymères comme le polybutadiène et l’acrylonitrile butadiène styrène (ABS), souvent non recyclés. L’utilisation d’un catalyseur au ruthénium permet des réactions rapides à basse température, garantissant une économie des ressources et une réduction des émissions polluantes. Les résultats, publiés dans le Journal of the American Chemical Society, montrent un potentiel considérable pour intégrer cette technologie à l’industrie, avec l’ambition de construire une économie circulaire pour les polymères.

Les vitrages en plastique moulé récompensés par le Hall of Fame de la SPE Automotive
La technologie des fenêtres encapsulées en plastique, introduite pour la première fois en 1978 par General Motors sur les modèles A-Body Chevrolet, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, et Buick, a été honorée par le Hall of Fame 2024 de la Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) Automotive Division. Ce processus innovant consistait à mouler un joint en PVC directement sur les bords des vitres, remplaçant les joints en caoutchouc traditionnels.
En plus d’améliorer l’esthétique, l’acoustique et l’étanchéité des vitres, cette technique a réduit les coûts de production et facilité l’intégration de fonctionnalités supplémentaires comme des mécanismes de fixation et des charnières. Des bactéries modifiées pour dégrader les microplastiques PET dans les eaux usées
Des chercheurs de l’Université de Waterloo ont génétiquement modifié des bactéries présentes dans les eaux usées pour qu’elles puissent biodégrader le polyéthylène téréphtalate (PET), un plastique courant utilisé dans les emballages alimentaires, les vêtements et les tapis. Ces bactéries agissent comme des « biorobots », capables de décomposer le PET en microplastiques, qui sont connus pour leurs effets néfastes sur la santé, notamment l’insulinorésistance et les troubles reproductifs.
La modification s’appuie sur un processus naturel, dit de « transfert génétique bactérien », permettant aux bactéries de partager du matériel génétique et d’acquérir la capacité de dégrader les plastiques. Ce procédé, testé dans des usines de traitement des eaux usées, limite les risques environnementaux en éliminant les bactéries modifiées avant le rejet de l’eau.
A terme, les chercheurs espèrent étendre cette technologie pour traiter les plastiques accumulés dans les océans, tout en évaluant les impacts potentiels d’un tel usage dans les milieux naturels. Un électrolyte polymère innovant booste les batteries sodium-soufre
Des chercheurs de l’Université Normale de Fujian ont conçu un électrolyte polymère quasi-solide (DS-QSPE) révolutionnaire, destiné à améliorer les performances des batteries sodium-soufre (Na-S). Ce matériau, synthétisé par polymérisation in situ, stabilise les interfaces électrode/électrolyte tout en limitant les effets de navette des polysulfures, problèmes majeurs des batteries Na-S.
Avec une conductivité ionique de 4,8 × 10⁻⁴ S·cm⁻¹ à 25 °C et un taux de transfert de sodium élevé (0,73), le DS-QSPE assure une capacité de 327,4 mAh·g⁻¹ après 200 cycles, tout en préservant 81,4 % de sa capacité initiale. Cette innovation marque une avancée majeure vers des solutions de stockage d’énergie à grande échelle, fiables et durables, adaptées aux énergies renouvelables.
