Les sachets de thé commerciaux libèrent des millions de microplastiques lors de leur utilisation
Une étude menée par le groupe Mutagenèse de l’Université Autonome de Barcelone (UAB) révèle que les sachets de thé en matériaux polymères tels que le nylon-6, le polypropylène et la cellulose libèrent d’importantes quantités de micro et nanoplastiques (MNPLs) lorsqu’ils sont utilisés pour préparer une infusion.
Lors de l’infusion, le polypropylène libère environ 1,2 milliard de particules par millilitre, avec une taille moyenne de 136,7 nanomètres, la cellulose en libère environ 135 millions, et le nylon-6 environ 8,18 millions. Ces particules ont été caractérisées à l’aide de techniques avancées telles que la microscopie électronique à balayage (SEM), la spectroscopie infrarouge (ATR-FTIR) et l’analyse par suivi de nanoparticules (NTA).
Pour la première fois, les chercheurs ont également étudié l’interaction de ces particules avec des cellules intestinales humaines. Ils ont observé que les cellules productrices de mucus absorbent une grande quantité de ces particules, qui peuvent même atteindre le noyau cellulaire contenant le matériel génétique. Ces résultats soulignent l’importance d’étudier les effets à long terme de l’exposition chronique aux MNPLs sur la santé humaine.
Les auteurs appellent à développer des méthodes normalisées pour évaluer la contamination par les MNPLs provenant des matériaux en contact avec les aliments et à mettre en place des politiques réglementaires visant à minimiser cette pollution.
Ces travaux s’inscrivent dans le cadre du projet européen PlasticHeal et ont été publiés dans Chemosphere.
Un biofilm comestible pour prolonger la durée de vie des fruits
Des chercheurs de l’Université nationale de Chungnam, en Corée du Sud, ont mis au point un biofilm innovant à base de chitosane et d’acide gallique, destiné à prolonger la fraîcheur des fruits périssables tout en réduisant le gaspillage alimentaire.
Le chitosane, dérivé de la chitine issue des carapaces de crustacés, est déjà connu pour ses propriétés biodégradables et non toxiques. Cependant, ses performances limitées en termes de barrière et d’activités antimicrobiennes freinent son utilisation comme revêtement alimentaire. En y intégrant l’acide gallique, un composé polyphénolique aux excellentes propriétés antioxydantes et antimicrobiennes, les chercheurs ont amélioré la solidité, la protection et l’efficacité antimicrobienne du film.
Lors de tests sur des bananes miniatures et des tomates cerises, ce biofilm a démontré des capacités renforcées à réduire la déshydratation, la décoloration et les pertes de masse, tout en prolongeant significativement la durée de conservation des fruits. Lavable et non toxique, il répond également aux préoccupations des consommateurs sur les résidus de revêtements alimentaires.
Ce biofilm pourrait jouer un rôle clé dans la lutte contre le gaspillage alimentaire, en s’inscrivant dans les objectifs de développement durable des Nations Unies pour réduire de moitié ce gaspillage d’ici 2030.

Optimisation du recyclage des plastiques par robotique et IA
À l’université d’Iéna, des robots de synthèse et des techniques spectroscopiques avancées sont mobilisés pour améliorer le recyclage des polymères. En partenariat avec des universités et entreprises allemandes, le projet SpecReK vise à analyser en temps réel la composition des plastiques recyclés, en combinant spectroscopie et intelligence artificielle.
Les données obtenues permettront d’identifier précisément les polymères, additifs et impuretés, et d’adapter les processus pour produire des matériaux recyclés de meilleure qualité. Ce projet pourrait ainsi renforcer l’économie circulaire en répondant à la demande croissante de plastiques recyclés haut de gamme.
Innovations Report Nouvelle génération d’écrans solaires : protection UV et refroidissement cutané
Des chercheurs ont développé une formule novatrice de crème solaire qui combine protection contre les UV et refroidissement cutané grâce à la technologie de refroidissement radiatif. Ce prototype, décrit dans Nano Letters, maintient la peau humaine jusqu’à 6 °C plus fraîche que la peau non protégée, et environ 3 °C plus fraîche que les écrans solaires classiques.
La formule repose sur des nanoparticules de dioxyde de titane (TiO₂) adaptées pour réfléchir à la fois les rayons UV et la chaleur solaire. Ce mélange, composé de TiO₂, eau, éthanol, crème hydratante, pigments et polydiméthylsiloxane, offre une protection SPF de 50, une résistance à l’eau et une efficacité prolongée après 12 heures d’exposition simulée. En tests extérieurs, il a démontré une efficacité de refroidissement tout en restant non irritant pour la peau.
Avec un coût de production compétitif, ce prototype présente un fort potentiel commercial face aux étés de plus en plus chauds.

Des ingénieurs de Princeton ont mis au point une technique d’impression 3D permettant de produire des plastiques souples avec des propriétés mécaniques programmables. Ces structures sont non seulement extensibles et flexibles, mais aussi recyclables et économiques. En utilisant des élastomères thermoplastiques, l’équipe a conçu des matériaux dont la rigidité et l’élasticité varient localement grâce à l’orientation de nanostructures cylindriques.
La méthode repose sur le contrôle précis de ces nanostructures, mesurant seulement 5 à 7 nanomètres, qui confèrent au matériau des propriétés directionnelles uniques. Une étape clé du processus, appelée recuit thermique, améliore les performances mécaniques tout en permettant la réutilisation et la réparation des objets imprimés. Ces innovations ouvrent la voie à des applications prometteuses dans les dispositifs médicaux, les robots souples et les capteurs électroniques.
