Récupération des microplastiques grâce à des nanoparticules magnétiques
Alors que les microplastiques envahissent l’environnement et infiltrent les organismes vivants, des chercheurs de l’Université de Sao Paulo ont mis au point une méthode innovante pour extraire ces particules de l’eau à l’aide d’aimants.
Le procédé repose sur des nanoparticules magnétiques fonctionnalisées avec de la polydopamine, un polymère dérivé de la dopamine. La polydopamine, connue pour ses propriétés adhésives, se lie fortement aux fragments de micro- et nanoplastiques en PET (polyéthylène téréphtalate), un plastique couramment utilisé dans les bouteilles et textiles. Une fois attachées aux particules de plastique, les nanoparticules magnétiques permettent leur extraction via un simple champ magnétique.
Vers une dégradation enzymatique
En parallèle, l’équipe explore l’utilisation de la lipase, une enzyme capable de décomposer le PET en ses monomères initiaux : l’acide téréphtalique et l’éthylène glycol. Ces composés pourraient ensuite être réutilisés pour synthétiser de nouveaux plastiques.
Cette méthode ouvre des perspectives prometteuses pour lutter contre la pollution plastique, notamment en combinant récupération et recyclage des microplastiques à l’échelle moléculaire.
Techniques de l’Ingénieur Un catalyseur pour transformer le méthane en polymères utiles
Des ingénieurs chimistes du MIT ont conçu un catalyseur hybride capable de convertir le méthane, un gaz à effet de serre puissant, en polymères à température ambiante et à pression atmosphérique. Ce procédé novateur pourrait contribuer à réduire les émissions de méthane tout en valorisant ce gaz sous forme de produits utiles.
Le méthane, majoritairement émis par l’agriculture, les décharges et la gestion du gaz naturel, est environ 25 fois plus puissant que le CO₂ en termes de réchauffement climatique. En utilisant une combinaison de zéolite (un minéral argileux) et d’enzyme naturelle, les chercheurs transforment le méthane en méthanol, puis en formaldéhyde. Ce dernier sert de précurseur à la fabrication de polymères tels que la résine urée-formaldéhyde, largement utilisée dans les panneaux de particules et les textiles.
Un procédé prometteur
Ce catalyseur, utilisant des ressources accessibles comme l’oxygène de l’air, pourrait être appliqué à grande échelle, notamment pour enduire des surfaces exposées au méthane ou sceller des fuites dans les pipelines de gaz naturel.
Avec cette approche, les chercheurs ouvrent la voie à des solutions innovantes pour convertir des gaz à effet de serre en matériaux industriels, tout en s’attaquant aux défis climatiques.

Un polymère métamorphe pour révolutionner les matériaux souples
Des chercheurs de l’Université d’État de l’Ohio ont mis au point un polymère innovant capable de changer de forme sous l’effet de la température. Fabriqué à partir d’un élastomère cristallin liquide (LCE), ce matériau souple peut se déformer dans plusieurs directions, imitant les mouvements naturels.
Ce polymère, inspiré des cristaux liquides utilisés dans les écrans, exploite des transitions de phases moléculaires induites par la chaleur pour réorganiser sa structure. Cette caractéristique le rend idéal pour des applications telles que les robots souples, les muscles artificiels ou les dispositifs médicaux avancés.
Les chercheurs ont identifié trois phases distinctes que le matériau traverse en fonction de la température, permettant une adaptabilité et une fabrication simplifiée. Un nouveau matériau biodégradable pour remplacer les microplastiques
Des ingénieurs du MIT ont conçu un matériau biodégradable innovant capable de remplacer les microbilles plastiques utilisées dans certains produits cosmétiques et de santé. Fabriqué à partir de polymères poly(β-amino ester), ce matériau se décompose en sucres et acides aminés inoffensifs. En plus de réduire l’impact environnemental des microplastiques, il offre des performances élevées dans diverses applications.
Ce matériau peut encapsuler des nutriments sensibles, comme les vitamines A et D, tout en les protégeant contre la dégradation due à la chaleur ou à l’humidité. Lors d’essais, il a été intégré à des cubes de bouillon, très utilisés en Afrique subsaharienne, tout en préservant les nutriments après deux heures d’ébullition.
Dans les produits cosmétiques, ce matériau biodégradable s’est révélé plus efficace que les microplastiques traditionnels pour éliminer des taches résistantes comme l’encre ou le maquillage, tout en étant plus respectueux de l’environnement.
Financé par la Fondation Gates, ce projet promet de transformer des industries clés, en réduisant la pollution plastique et en répondant aux besoins de durabilité. Une méthode d’imagerie révolutionnaire pour explorer les structures nanométriques des caoutchoucs

Une précision accrue pour des analyses fiables
En s’appuyant sur des traitements mathématiques avancés, la méthode améliore sélectivement la visibilité des zones où les molécules de caoutchouc s’assemblent en réseaux. Cela permet une analyse automatisée et simultanée de plusieurs échantillons, éliminant la subjectivité inhérente aux techniques traditionnelles.
Les mesures obtenues, telles que la longueur des réseaux moléculaires, montrent une forte corrélation avec les valeurs expérimentales, validant ainsi la fiabilité de cette innovation. Cette avancée ouvre la voie à une conception plus précise de caoutchoucs sûrs et performants, optimisés pour des applications variées, de l’automobile au médical, tout en contribuant à des économies de ressources et d’énergie.
Un emballage flexible en rPET 100 % recyclable : le projet BOTTLE4FLEX
Le projet BOTTLE4FLEX vise à répondre aux exigences de la Stratégie européenne d’économie circulaire, qui impose une recyclabilité totale des emballages plastiques d’ici 2030. En Espagne, seul le rPET est actuellement autorisé pour les emballages alimentaires recyclés, mais les films multicouches flexibles en PET restent difficiles à recycler par des méthodes mécaniques traditionnelles.
Pour relever ce défi, AIMPLAS, Covinil et Eroski développent des emballages skinpack entièrement recyclables à partir de rPET. Ces emballages, qui forment une « seconde peau » autour du produit, offrent des avantages en matière de présentation, de conservation et de transport tout en posant des problèmes de recyclabilité.
Le projet explore des processus innovants, tels que la solvolyse pour dépolymériser partiellement le PET, ainsi que des technologies comme l’extrusion réactive et l’ajout d’additifs, afin d’améliorer la flexibilité et les propriétés barrières des matériaux recyclés. Soutenu par des fonds européens et nationaux, BOTTLE4FLEX pourrait ouvrir la voie à une circularité accrue des plastiques dans l’industrie alimentaire.
