Les microplastiques s’accumulent dans les sols agricoles et s’infiltrent silencieusement dans notre alimentation
Une étude menée par Murdoch University révèle que les sols agricoles contiennent 23 fois plus de microplastiques que les océans. Ces plastiques, enrichis de plus de 10 000 additifs chimiques, souvent non réglementés, contaminent déjà des cultures comme la laitue, le blé ou la carotte. Ces particules migrent ensuite vers les tissus humains : poumons, cerveau, cœur, sang, placenta. L’étude alerte aussi sur les additifs de substitution (BPF, BPS), aussi perturbateurs endocriniens que le BPA, ainsi que sur d’autres composés toxiques (phtalates, PBDE). Face à cette pollution diffuse mais systémique, les chercheurs appellent à une coordination urgente entre science, réglementation et industrie. Le Bioplastics Innovation Hub développe en réponse un bioplastique sûr et biodégradable, testé notamment dans un projet de spray agricole anti-évaporation à base de biopolymère.
Des microparticules polymères pour des vaccins à injection unique
Des chercheurs du MIT ont mis au point une technologie de microparticules polymères capables de libérer plusieurs doses de vaccin à des intervalles programmés après une seule injection. Testée avec succès sur le vaccin contre la diphtérie chez la souris, cette stratégie utilise des polyanhydrides, polymères hydrophobes dont la dégradation crée un environnement moins acide que les PLGA classiques, évitant ainsi l’inactivation des antigènes. Grâce à un procédé de microfabrication appelé SEAL, les particules sont scellées et libèrent leur contenu après un délai précis, ici 2 semaines. Un modèle d’apprentissage automatique a permis d’anticiper les cinétiques de libération selon la structure chimique et les propriétés des polymères. Cette approche pourrait révolutionner l’administration vaccinale, notamment en remplaçant les rappels multiples par une seule injection, particulièrement utile dans les régions à accès médical limité.

Des plastiques à dépolymérisation programmée grâce aux tétrazènes
Des chercheurs lyonnais ont mis au point une stratégie de polymérisation inédite permettant de produire des plastiques capables de se dépolymériser proprement sur commande, ouvrant la voie à un recyclage chimique contrôlé et circulaire. En utilisant une molécule azotée, le tétraméthyltétrazène (TMTZ), comme amorceur radicalaire, ils ont réussi à créer des polymères comme le PMMA et le polystyrène avec une extrémité de chaîne stable et ré-activable. Chauffée à une température seuil, cette extrémité déclenche la dépolymérisation totale en monomères, sans catalyseur métallique. Les rendements atteignent 88 % pour le PMMA et 62 % pour le polystyrène, ce qui constitue un record pour ce dernier. Cette approche représente une avancée majeure vers des polymères « zippés » éco-conçus, recyclables à la demande et potentiellement adaptés à l’échelle industrielle.
Vers des sachets compostables pour les sauces et cosmétiques grâce à Futamura
Futamura, Repaq et GK Sondermaschinenbau ont mis au point un sachet compostable destiné aux produits liquides comme le ketchup, la moutarde ou les crèmes. Ce sachet innovant associe un film barrière à base de cellulose (NatureFlex) à une couche de biopolymère hermétique, les deux certifiés compostables (industriel et domestique). Il offre une barrière à l’oxygène efficace, une durée de conservation jusqu’à 12 mois, et passe sans ajustement majeur sur les lignes de conditionnement existantes. Cette avancée répond à la problématique environnementale posée par les petits emballages non recyclables.

Un polymère biodégradable en mer aussi résistant que le nylon
Des chercheurs coréens ont mis au point un nouveau polyester-amide (PEA) qui se dégrade à plus de 92 % en un an dans des conditions marines réelles, tout en conservant une résistance mécanique comparable au nylon. Publié dans Advanced Materials, ce matériau associe des liaisons esters (biodégradables) et amides (robustes) dans un ratio optimisé. Il est thermoresistant (jusqu’à 150 °C), recyclable, et produit sans solvants toxiques via une polymérisation en fusion compatible avec les lignes industrielles existantes. Fabriqué à partir d’huile de ricin et de déchets de nylon recyclé, il divise par trois l’empreinte carbone par rapport au nylon 6. Un candidat prometteur pour des textiles, filets de pêche ou emballages réellement durables.
Un capteur polymère ultra-sensible pour détecter instantanément les fuites d’hydrogène
Des chercheurs de l’Université KAUST ont mis au point un capteur à base de polymère semi-conducteur (DPP-DTT) capable de détecter des traces d’hydrogène dès 192 ppb, avec une réponse en moins d’une seconde, à température ambiante et pour une consommation infime (2 µW). Contrairement aux capteurs commerciaux lents, énergivores et peu sensibles, ce dispositif repose sur une nouvelle mécanique de détection, où l’hydrogène réagit avec l’oxygène absorbé dans le polymère pour générer un signal électrique. Résistant à l’humidité, aux mélanges gazeux complexes, et testé en situation réelle (fuite, drone), ce capteur imprimable à bas coût représente une avancée prometteuse pour la sécurité de l’économie hydrogène.
