Un polyuréthane inspiré de l’étoile de mer rouge se répare sous l’eau en 12 heures
Des chercheurs chinois du NIMTE, en collaboration avec le KAIST, ont mis au point un polyuréthane auto-cicatrisant fonctionnant sous l’eau à température ambiante, inspiré des capacités régénératives des étoiles de mer rouges. Le polymère repose sur l’intégration de deux unités hydrophobes et de liaisons dynamiques en tandem, permettant une cicatrisation rapide même en milieu aqueux. Après immersion pendant 12 heures, les rayures disparaissent totalement, avec une efficacité de réparation de 98 % et une vitesse de plus de 33 µm/h. Le matériau, capable de supporter une charge de 500 g après auto-réparation, présente aussi une excellente biocompatibilité, ce qui ouvre la voie à des applications en robotique sous-marine et dispositifs médicaux implantables.

Le Maryland adopte une loi phare sur le recyclage des emballages plastiques
Le gouverneur du Maryland, Wes Moore, a signé une nouvelle loi sur la responsabilité élargie des producteurs (EPR) concernant les emballages, saluée par l’industrie du plastique. Ce texte impose aux fabricants de financer l’amélioration des infrastructures de recyclage via un système de redevances. Il cible notamment les films plastiques flexibles, encore peu recyclés.
Selon une première évaluation de l’État, la loi pourrait faire progresser le recyclage des films flexibles de 9 %, notamment grâce à un modèle collaboratif inspiré du Minnesota. Les contrevenants s’exposent à des amendes pouvant aller jusqu’à 20 000 $.
Des associations comme la Flexible Packaging Association (FPA) et Plastics Industry Association soutiennent fortement cette mesure. Elles y voient un moyen de promouvoir un modèle circulaire, de réduire les déchets et de soutenir l’innovation. La FPA, représentant une industrie de 42 milliards de dollars de chiffre d’affaires aux États-Unis, jouera un rôle actif dans la mise en œuvre du programme.
Le Maryland rejoint ainsi une série croissante d’États américains adoptant des lois EPR, aux côtés du Maine, de l’Oregon, de la Californie ou du Colorado. L’objectif commun est d’améliorer le recyclage, réduire l’impact environnemental des emballages, et renforcer la responsabilité des producteurs.

Un véhicule électrique urbain intègre du polypropylène recyclé
Le mini-véhicule électrique « mibot » développé par KG Motors au Japon utilise du polypropylène (PP) recyclé à 25 %, fourni par Japan Polypropylene sous la marque Novaorbis-MR. C’est la première application de ce matériau recyclé dans un composant de mobilité. Destiné aux déplacements urbains de courte distance, le mibot pèse 430 kg, atteint 60 km/h, et intègre également du polycarbonate résistant aux UV. Le PP Novaorbis-MR peut atteindre 50 % de contenu recyclé dans les pièces intérieures, tout en conservant de bonnes propriétés mécaniques, contribuant ainsi à des solutions de mobilité plus durables.

Des microplastiques en fuite depuis les baies texanes vers le large
Des chercheurs de l’Université du Texas à Austin ont montré que les sédiments des baies de Matagorda contiennent étonnamment peu de microplastiques — des concentrations 100 à 1 000 fois inférieures à d’autres environnements côtiers. Publiée dans Environmental Science & Technology, cette étude révèle que les microplastiques ne s’accumulent pas sur place mais sont emportés vers le golfe du Mexique, portés par les vents et la faible profondeur de la baie. Or, en mer, ces particules peuvent adsorber des polluants et contaminer les chaînes alimentaires jusqu’à l’humain. Cette étude pionnière fournit des données de référence pour la côte texane et ouvre la voie à une nouvelle discipline : la sédimentologie environnementale appliquée aux plastiques.
Des films alimentaires biodégradables à base de cellulose bactérienne comme alternative aux plastiques pétrosourcés
Une équipe de l’Université nationale de Taïwan, dirigée par le Pr Ying-Chih Liao, a mis au point des films d’emballage alimentaires entièrement biodégradables, à base de cellulose bactérienne (BC), de chitosane (CS) et de polyuréthane hydrosoluble (WPU). Le procédé repose sur une stratégie d’intégration innovante : une pulvérisation in situ permet une répartition homogène du chitosane, améliorant l’activité antimicrobienne, tandis qu’un traitement à l’ion sodium renforce la structure et la résistance à l’eau. Enfin, le revêtement WPU confère des capacités de thermoscellage. Ces films combinent transparence, résistance mécanique et flexibilité, atteignant des performances comparables aux sachets zip commerciaux. Entièrement dégradables en sol en moins de deux mois, ces matériaux représentent une solution prometteuse aux films plastiques alimentaires traditionnels, sans rejets toxiques.

Des polymères synthétiques capables d’encoder un mot de passe déchiffré électriquement
Des chercheurs de l’Université du Texas à Austin ont développé une méthode innovante pour stocker de l’information dans des polymères synthétiques en utilisant des signaux électrochimiques. En combinant quatre monomères électroactifs, ils ont créé un alphabet moléculaire permettant d’encoder jusqu’à 256 caractères différents. Ce système a permis de coder un mot de passe de 11 caractères dans une chaîne polymère, puis de le déchiffrer électriquement grâce à une dégradation contrôlée qui libère les monomères un à un, chacun ayant une signature électrique unique. Bien que destructif et encore lent (2,5 heures pour 11 caractères), ce procédé constitue une avancée prometteuse vers un stockage de données polymère lisible sans spectrométrie, avec pour perspective des dispositifs intégrés plus compacts et durables.
